OEM starter - reliability?

Post by gcretro » Sat Apr 21, 2012 11:22 pm

2004 Neon SE, 110K miles.

How reliable is the OEM starter motor? Any preventive maintenance that can be done? like changing solenoid contacts or brushes?

The starter on my other car 02 Camry quit a week back. Hence curious about the neon's.

thanks

my OEM starter quit randomly after installing the mag intake i had last year with only 50-60K. so looks like you got a pretty good one. also it sounds like your asking for a starter rebuil? i would be suprised if you could find one. starters are throw away items now, actually there really aren't too many things you CAN rebuild on a car these days.

After 337000km the one on my 2000 is still original, battery for that matter too.

How to fix your car:
1. Buy a Haynes manual
2. Read Haynes maual
3. Read and search appropriate threads, trust us, it's been covered before
4. Fix car
5. Consume beer of job well done

Starters on these are pretty stout.

Well if you are removing the IM, you can re route the big wire so it doesn't go through the center of the IM. Make future IM removal a bit less of a PITA. You will have extra cable, so you may need to tie wrap it to take up some slack.

Are you sure you knocked on wood and not some kind of wood substitute?
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Hey, it was 7000 mile wood. Still pretty impressive.

Turned out the bendix was seized, at least moving it by hand. It actually cracked the plastic housing for the sun gear, pushing the gear out. It was still working, just randomly grinding my ring gear....

So I fully disassembled it, super glued the plastic housing back together, cleaned the old grease out, re lubed it, and it is cranking like a boss again.

Now it will just fuck me, with no warning...
