REQ Radio

Post by catalyst » Wed Jun 13, 2012 10:32 pm

REQ, it's the new style radio. Can we talk about if this style radio will fit?

How much modification would be needed?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2007-2010-Chrys ... _983wt_932

I think a saws all, a bracket or two and an adapter would make it fit.

main question, how wide is it, the depth looks like there is NO issue

the height is a double din meaning that there will be some REALLY simply modification that you can do in a number of different ways. the plugs you'll have to
1) get a harness that plugs into it,
2)then figure out what each prong does and custom wire everything yourself (would take me about an hour to do all the wires with the proper schematic. and that is also soldering, taping and making it look near factory work)

Think that's all i have to say for now. BTW, looks SUPER wide.. wider than neons.

The basic body of the radio is pretty much the same size (DIN and 1/2). It just uses a square face opening vs. the oval one our cars have. As far as depth from the mounting flange to the face, I'm not sure if that is the same or not.

I have some of these style radios at home. I can get some comparison pics for ya.

Now for the bad news...all these newer radios work off a CAN Bus communication system. Our cars use the older J1850 system. There is no way (that I know of) to make the radios function in our cars. There are adaptors to make Hi speed CAN Bus work in Low speed CAN Bus, but not in J1850. Sorry.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Aww sad face @ Danteneon. So the radio itself would just not work with our computer? They should just be USB now... can that be done? can to usb to J1850?

My current radio broke so I'm thinking of different options that have a stock look.

I think as good as you're going to get with stock is the rb1, or rb4. they are pretty sweet

Are you looking for USB interface for a particular function? I.E. Ipod/MP3, flash drive, re-charge port? All of those can be integrated with a stock Neon head unit.

I went best buy and the clerk said I should just have to buy a new harness just the same as buying an aftermarket radio... sounds too different from what Dante said. Wouldn't it work like making and older printer talk to a newer computer? serial io to usb?

He be wrong...very wrong.

It isn't so much an interface problem where the pins on one type of connector have to match another, but rather the car is speaking remedial Spanish and the radio only understands hi-speed Swahili.

Here is a pretty good page describing the highlights of the Can bus system.

http://www.aa1car.com/library/can_systems.htm

The older J1850 just sends and receives data across one wire at a much lower bit rate. A Can bus radio will not work on the older system (and vice-versa).

I am, yes, but my wife is old fashioned and wants CDs... I'm also lazy and I don't want to burn all my old CDs.

Dang it. I wonder if it would be fesable to make a small closed CAN system just for the radio... Probably not. Can the RB1/4 play MP3 CDs?

I guess you didn't see the center console mod I did?

Image

The RB1 and RB4 will play CDs, but the nav will not work while doing so. That was the reason for the mod I did. The RB1 has a AUX setting (for 6 disc changers) so you can listen to CDs and have nav at the same time. I don't do CDs any more, so I bought an interface that plus into the CD changer port in the back of the radio. The interface has a RCA audio in (that I adapted over to 1/8" phono) to plug my Zune into. The USB ports are hard wired into the ACC circuit of the car to provide charging to whatever I need.

Oh, did you like my language based metaphor? I picked it just for you, being a Pseudo-polyglot and all. :D

It may turn on, and function? Not sure on this, but it should power on at least. If there is some kind of security lock out, it may not function at all.

But it wouldn't communicate with other systems in the car. Blue tooth, GPS etc...

I installed my USB power ports in the cubby hole area, with a face plate. Great for the GPS, phone, etc that can use a USB cable to charge, so much cleaner than cig lighter sized power outlets.

Can bus is funny. If you install a low speed radio into a hi speed car, it can keep the car from starting. No lie.

I have messed around quite a bit with the new protocol radios trying to get the MyGig to work in the 07 Caliber. There is a company that makes an adaptor to allow the newer (low speed)radios work in the first gen Can bus cars. But for J1850 you are full out of luck.

I have a feeling if you could make it work, the cost would be more than the radio is worth - new from the dealer.

I see. I guess I'll go the RB1/4 route and modify it to usb/aux. I'll probably pm you some questions Dante.

Yes I did like your language referance.
