How-To: Install a stock spoiler on non-spolier trunk

Post by kc2005ptgt » Sat Jul 15, 2006 12:33 pm

Ok, I know people do it, and some people get it really quick, while others ask, so to save questions, I will do my own write up on it for those of you who want. This actually took me about 10 minutes to do, and unless you are blind or cock-eyed, this should be a snap!

Ok, here goes:

You will need:
1) Good power drill, with high RPM's - I prefer a plug in, not battery powered, but whatever.
2) drill bits - 1/8" and 9/32"
3) automotive black rtv silcone sealant - type 270
4) safety glasses
5) 6" ruler, anything bigger will NOT work due to room!
6) Sharpie marker in your favorite color

1. open trunk and look at the edge of the trunk next to the trunk mounts. you should see two large, 1" diameter holes there (total of four, two on each side)

2. with a black (or other color depending on trunk color) marker/sharpie, place a small dot in the CENTER of the hole. If you can not find the center, do not worry to much. Trying to measure will yield little results, but you can get close.

3. using a 1/8" drill bit, drill out the underside of the trunk hold first (hence, the reason you marked underneath first). Hold the trunk with your hand (not near where you are drilling!!!) and using some pressure, slowly start drilling until it grabs ahold, then speed up - it will pop through really quick, so be on your toes!

4. after doing all 4 like that, make sure your holes are close to 4 3/16" to 4 5/16" apart. Now take the spoiler and hold it right over the holes on the trunk and the bolts should line up.

5. now close the trunk and switch out drill bits to a 9/32" drill bit (it needs to be larger than the 1/4" bolts ). Be VERY careful now, for you are on the top of the trunk where all can see. Going slowly, drill into the holes you just drilled out from underneath.

6. After you get the holes drilled, and all the shavings off your trunk, prep the bolts with the rtv sealant, putting a SMALL amount around the base of the mounting bolt next to the spoiler.

7. the silcone needs a few minutes to set, so give it 10 - in the mean time, check to see if your holes lined up well - mine did, and I did mine all by the eye (not eyes, I hurt one previously ). They should be about 4 1/4" apart from center to center of holes.

8. after 10 minutes (or if you prepped prior to drilling) you can mount the spoiler. Pop the trunk (you will need it open at some point). Place the bolts in the holes and giving gentle pushes, place the spoiler in the holes. Do not worry if it does not go down and sit firm, for when you torque on the nuts, it will seat properly.

9. once it is in and staying in, open trunk and hold spoiler with other hand all while placing the nuts on the bolts - just hand tighten, then go back and torque down - like 11lbs, or hand tighten till it is sits firm, then trun 1/4 more. DO NOT DO IT TO TIGHT OR YOU CAN RUIN THE SPOILER, TRUNK, AND BOLTS. :)

10. Step back and mock all the naysayer, spoiler hating people who said do not do it, even though you like it and so does your family and friends, but some neon owners seem to think our cars look good without them because for some reason a FWD car is not supposed to have them  Sorry, that step is not necessary.

Enjoy!! I hope this is helpful for all of you!

I gotta do this sometime...damn i'm kinda nervous. The holes I couldn't say are pre-drilled but they're more there than not.

Read the thread...went to get a spoiler and I got lucky. The info here is good. Figured it was worth a bump. However useless you may consider it.

Extremely useless, I consider it as well. Oh well. Guess we all bumped this shit out of this. *Leaves to go comment about in an eBay UDP thread about how the car I bought has a MPx UDP already installed on it*
