How To: Paint Reverse Light Red (or Amber)

First thing, you need the following item (for Red only! I do not have a part# for amber)
Testor's Transparent Candy Apple Red - from Walmart, $2.97 rattle can.

Also need the following items: 2" Blue Painters Tape and a Razor.

Ok, to get started, you need to take off your taillights.

Now, clean it off good, and then let it dry or dry it with a clean, lint free cloth. Take your painters tape and start from one end of the light and go all the way across to the other end right along the edge of the taillight. Then, repeat till the entire light is covered like so. I tried not to overlap the first two pieces due to it should cover the reverse light. Do not forget to mask off the black pieces too!!

Now comes the only hard part - if you feel along the reverse light, there is a slight ridge which you can follow if you are steady, and you cut out the blue tape of this portion. I also used a light underneath it to help guide me along visually. End product should look like so:

Now, lay out some newspaper (I used four whole pieces!) and begin to spray it!! Use long burst with steady even strokes, overspraying onto the painters tape. End should look like this:

Do the other side, and you have it!

Yum....I like both. The all red looks great on Andy's red car....and that amber would look awesome on any color car.

I love subtle mods that most people don't notice....

O ya and I didnt use the stuff he did. Mine was a candy mixed from painters supply. Cost was $6 for a rattle can.

lol. To be completely honest, I didn't even mask mine off. I didn't even THINK of that!! I just grabbed some stained glass paint from Michael's and started painting the tails, all over, one big smooth covering. Buffed em afterwards.

Yes, I have an SRT rear bumper. No, it's not painted and on yet lol.

Yes it would but I used LED plate lights that are white and hooked them up

mine shine through "pinkish" instead of red or white, and I backed up in front of cops several times with not even a single glance my way, so I assume it is something that ifillegal, cops do not care unless they want a reason to pull you over

BTW, The paint I used has started to fade, discoloring to a amber-look instead of red. Maybe a UV-stable clearcoat over the stained glass paint would help?

i thought thats what the brand was, but i was at wal mart, could not find that brand. i'll have to try another wal mart.

If you're doing the red it's a lot easier to just coat the whole tail lamp. It requires less masking and it eliminates the slight ridge caused by the thickness of the paint on the reverse lamp.

but then wouldnt the rest of the light be more red than the reverse?

wal marts started phasing out Testors paints, and replacing them with a House of Kolors spray paint line. There is also a scammer that sells "JDM red tail light tint" on ebay... aka it's literally a can of testor's candy red paint that he rips all the labels off, jacks up the price and sells it... and gets away with false advertising. the guy is an asshole too.

next time i'm at wal mart, i keep my eyes open for House of Kolors in candy red apple paint.

It starts off a bit darker, but that stuff fades pretty quickly in sunlight back to a shade that's a lot closer to OEM.

You could always go to a Michaels or Wal-Mart and get Krylon "Stained Glass" spray paint instead. A lot of the SRT guys use it on their tails (red) and fogs (amber/yellow).

If you used the stained glass paint, wouldn't you have to use it on the inside of the taillight? Or could you do it to the outside?
