How-to Red out taillights
How-to Red out taillights
This How-to was made with help from kup@l @ srtforums
Materials:
Red Metalcast by duplicolor spray paint
Flat head screwdriver
Masking tape
Oven/Heat gun
1/2" socket and ratchet
1. First take off the tail lights off. Pop the trunk, remove that cover area behind your tails. There are 3 1/2 bolts. Then Remove the 3 bolts and light bulbs.
2. Once you do that take your tails give them a clean with a wet paper towel then dry them
3. Now what you wanna do is preheat your oven to 250 degrees. Then once heated, lay a wet towel (fabric kitchen towel not a paper towel!!!) on the rack. Then place your tails for 5min and only 5 min. (Caution over heating WILL melt your tails. Check up on them)
4. After 5 min, you get screwdriver, and pry them apart at the TABS of the tails, then you could pry all around. Be sure not to rush or you could crack them. Just take your time prying them apart all around. There will be some rubber gunk sealant. So it might be tricky, but just cut them apart with a blade. Remember its a must to be careful because you can crack your tails. Just be patient and work it out.
5. Then once apart, mask with masking tape the parts of the INNER taillight lense that you dont want to paint. So your just gonna leave the white area open to paint. They should look like this when apart.
6. Then grab your Red Metalcast and spray 4-5 coats but not too much so it doesn't drip or run. Have a 5 min window for each coat. Do not touch to see if dry. Wait an hour before reinstall
7. Then reattach the taillight lense to the housing once again but no need to heat. Just be careful not to rush things. You might need some muscle to push to get the tabs in right. Once in give them a last good push just to make sure they sit correctly. Then reverse the uninstall steps.

Good write up
I've always been nervous about putting them in the oven. I'm a bit confused about the fact that they do not need to be reheated or resealed after painting. Won't they leak?

silvracr - nice write up. I did mine differently and was happy with the results. I heated the oven to 200* which wasn't hot enough because I had to leave them in for 20 minutes. Instead of masking off the reverse light I painted the entire inside red to better match the the colors and make them uniform. I used Krylon stained glass paint for the red. And after I painted them I tossed them back in the oven to melt the glue on tail lights to make sure it was sealed and it looks really good.
Does look really good
I'm strongly considering this, since it's really just a can of paint and some time, which is in my budget right now

^ PLZ don't on your OB. Everything is OB and flat black, plus some blue. PLZ don't.
Also, there'll be more red tails posted like this in like a matter of minutes. Those tails Ryan posted are on MY silver car now. Take THAT MikeB! Anyway, they look tits on most cars. Not OB though :/
EDIT:
We used stain glass paint, not the Metalcast stuff you cats used. Also, he sprayed the entire inside of the light, not just the reverse light. Uniform red FTW.

Plus the shape of the clear part of the tails is goofy IMO.
EDIT: Someone P/S it for me!

Look at it in that picture. Not lit up. White. I know that the lens depicts the color. But it still appears white, like it or not.FAC3L3SS wrote:It's not white though. It's clear. It lights up white because of the bulb. I figured you'd know that
OE > all red on OB. Just my worthless $.02....even though I haz red.
The half moon is the part that bothers me I think, not so much the color.
Ryan - I planned on disabling that lamp and wiring in an LED under the bumper that would come on as a reverse lamp. That way I'm legal, plus it would be much brighter for it's actual purpose, which is so you can see behind you in the dark when in reverse. The LED would be stealthily mounted of course, and would be tucked away well.

I have LED's under the bumper. They work ok, but ppl don't notice them as well as them being in the tails. Too low I guess.

IMO all red wouldn't look good on your OB's. My blacked out tails looked much better on there. I hate looking at the rear end now that they aren''t on there.
But enough discussion in this how-to lol.

I personally think it looks pretty damn legit on ANY 03+ lights, regardless of the car's color. Every car I've seen with them has looked better red than stock. Someone P/S that damn thing for me already I wanna see for myself!

Adam, you're too much.
