How To: Short Antenna

Post by steez » Mon Jun 11, 2012 6:45 pm

I didn't see a how-to done on this yet. It's pretty self-explanatory, lots of people have already done this.

I haven't listened to see how bad it affects reception, but I don't listen to the radio so I don't really care  .

1. Take off stock antenna, 10mm wrench.
Image

2. Cut to desired length
Image

3. I capped my cut with the top of a pt antenna. I think some people take the ball off the top of the stock one and re-hammer it on to where they cut it. Either way, super-glue it on.

4. Tape off threads
Image

5. Paint & clear coat, let dry for 24 hours
Image

6. Re-install

7. Done

I just tried doing this. On both neons it was 10mm. (01 and 03). I used a torch on the ball, then smacked it off. Try to re tap it in and just fell off into the ground gone, hard to do....but can be done.

Edit: Bought these - "Vinyl Antenna Tube Caps."

I did this, then just sorta rounded off the antenna (fuck that ball) and bombed it black. Reception didn't change, but apparently Indiana is super flat and wide open so what would I know? :shrugs:

I have this done to my car as well. Cut mine @ 15". I have not noticed any drop in reception. I think I remember reading somewhere that as long as its 12" or longer reception should not diminish much. Looks alot better than the almost 3' long stocker.

The thing to keep in mind is that Chrysler only makes one length antenna mast. It is made long enough to get to the roof height of the tallest vehicle with the lowest fenders (Dodge Ram). As long as the mast is at or near the roof line of the car (around 15" IIRC), reception will not be affected.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

I have found when a woman's feet/legs are near the roof line, like rabbit ears, my reception goes bezerk.

IIRC mine is only about 6" long. . .

The antenna however, I've not actually measured.

ok guys just cut mine and removed the ball, drilled the ball out a lil bigger to fit nicely over the shorter 12" antenna. Also then used JB Weld to secure the ball back on. It is now getting painted black of course. I will post pics when its all cleared and back on the car.
