How-To: Instrument Cluster Self-Test (Sweep)

Post by OB » Wed Jun 08, 2011 8:55 pm

Though this is a very simple procedure, not many people know how to do it. To my knowledge, this works on all 00+ PL and PT models, probably others as well. For those who weren't aware of this altogether, the self test is exactly what it sounds like. The cluster tests all lamps and functions, including a multi-point gauge needle sweep, odometer display text, and chime.

Apparently on some Chrysler cars, DTC's are also displayed at the very end of the test. I tested mine while I had a known DTC stored and it did not show codes. If anyone gets a different result let me know!

Step 1: With the key in the off position, press and hold the odometer trip reset button for 2 seconds.

Step 2: While still holding the button, turn the key to the RUN position. Once in RUN, release the button and observe.

Class dismissed!

Diagnostic Trouble Code, basically the codes that make the CEL light up, tho not all codes will light the CEL.

^Indeed. Good to know on the Jeep too. I bet it works on several cars, hopefully others chime in.

My '99 Dakota does if you keep holding it for a while after you turn the key.

Is this recalibrating the needles to ensure they're properly aligned? Mine appear to be off a bit, and it's a nuisance especially for the fuel and rpm one. LMK!

It may, although it's more for verifing that the gauges do in fact work as they should. I did the sweep a couple of times to the euro cluster I bought to make sure the gauges moved nice and smooth. They were rough at first, but after 3 sweeps they were fine. Try it and see
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

To my knowledge they're just a self-test, but I could see how a little exercise for the needles might correct a little deadspot, or something along those lines.
