How to: Fog lights on w/o headlights on

Access the fuse box

Image
Do NOT remove these screws, as I figured out by trial and error.

Image
THESE are the correct screws to remove in order to gain access to the wires to cut.

Image
Pull fuse box out.

Image
Pull back the wrap and remove the electrical tape as needed.

Image
Cut and strip the PINK and GREEN wire...

Image
...Then do the same for the PURPLE and WHITE one. Then cross the wires and tape them up.

Image
This is the result when the headlights are turned two clicks (1- Parking, 2- Is now FOGS).

Image
Look closer and you can see that the headlights are not on, but the parking lights and fog lights are.

Image
Just a shot to show the unmodified switch. Notice that it is turned on to what is normally HEADLIGHTS, but the FOG LIGHT indicator is lit up on the cluster.

For headlights just pull out the switch as if you were turning on your fog lights. They are reversed now.

Also, my [ headlights + door opened = chime ] still works.

Just be sure if you test your work in the middle of the day that your brights aren't on like mine were, or you'll be confused.

Now only if I can find out how to make it so when I click my parking lights on, my fog lights come on.

pardon my ignorance... but I read thru this twice....

if the first click is parking lights... and the 2nd click is fogs now...
How do you turn on the regular headlights?

Couldn't you just wire the fogs directly to the side markers so then the fogs would come on w/ your parking lights. Since they are relatively close to each other on the car it shouldn't be to hard to do.

The only thing is that they would be on even when the headlights are on.

Heh, i'm getting a pair of fogs and i don't have the fog controls on my car but i may just very well do that.

Well I'm back, I got it so they work like he said, while in the headlight position, the fogs are on, and while in fog position, all lights are on.

Good writeup, I was just stupid lol.

Yeah, when I did mine I was disappointed at first because I thought it didn't change anything- but it was in the middle of the day so I wasn't sure. Then I realized I just had my brights on.

Why not just run a wire from the fog fuse to the HL fuse? Fogs are on all the time then.

I think that's what this little fix does...(?)

..or maybe you are not realizing that the people with stock fog lights, seem to want to run with only the parking lights and the fog lights on... not the headlights. ..and stock configuation will not let you do this...

No, I realize this, I think you missed what I said.

You can run the foglights all the time, sans parking lights or headlights being on. I'll have to look at how I did it, and then write it up.

thats what i did... and since the fog lights are wired parallel, all you have to do is run ONE wire from the positive left parking light down to the left fog light. takes a whole 5 minutes :D

Yellowpatrol, hows it holding up? No problems with it yet? I might go ahead and do this mod, but use shielded Male/Felmale connectors so I can change it up as I please without having to re-strip the wires.

dont feel bad i have factory fog lights and i dont look so good for me i did the mod and then a few months ago the passanger fog lens falls off as im driving down the road and i ran over it then the rain gets in there and the bulb goes out. and now my luck the driver side fog lens falls off today and i ran over it so i did the mod for nothing until i get my evo 5 front bumper on and fog lights hooked up.

no that this post is brought back....
I'm assuming with this mod, while your headlights are on, the fogs are too...
I'm assuming the headlights will turn on when you pull the switch out to enable the fogs? while this idea is great, what about those who want to run with the headlights on but no fogs?
It seems to me with this mod, when you turn the headlights on, the fogs come on instead, and in order to get the headlights on, you need to pull out on the switch to enable them?

The only thing you may not like is the fact u can't just turn the fogs off n on whenever you feel. My idea was wiring them to a push button subaru switch, haha. I miss my Rex =(
