How To: MTV indicator

Post by Craz1000 » Thu Jun 26, 2008 2:34 pm

well i was asked to do this so here we go

what youll need depends on what your going to use to let you know.. in this writeup im going to use an LED

the fist thing you have to do is to figure out where you want your LED, usually inside the cluster is good or arround its trim. its pretty simple really goto the red line of the MTV actuator and tap a wire into it and run it to where you want to put the led.

now you have to find out which way the LED will let current flow though. An LED is basically a diode which only lets electricity flow in one direction, the only difference is when it lets current flow it emits light. you HAVE to put a resistor on one side of the LED dosent matter where as long as its somewhere in the circuit or else your gonna blow out your LED preforably something over 500 ohms but no more than 2k.

wire it up to the line coming from the MTV the other side goes to ground and mount your LED and your done... you got a Magnum indicator

I also wondered what that fuse was for in the engine bay. MTV relay? WTF? I don't need no stinkin' Music Television.

It's a way to let you know when the "butterflies" (AKA Manifold Tuning Valve) are powered (as in should be open) on the Magnum IM.

The proper set up would be about the same cost as a battery. Just sayin'.

Why would you even leave it on long enough to forget about it? You will eventually burn out the motor coil. They are only designed to be on for a minute or two at the most. Unless you run constantly in the specified RPM windows at WOT.

If nothing else, wire the control relay coil through the ignition switched fuses so it shuts off with the engine.

But to answer your question, the led will work if it is rated for 12 volts, or has the proper resistor.

you loose mid range power with them always open that is why they open from idle to 3000-close-then open from 5000-redline only at WOT when you need it. like od said it is cheaper than buying a battery and much less hassle than buying and installing 3 batteries

if you listen close you can hear mine kick on.. since i have a shitty fart can on, it kind of drowns them out.. i wired a dopey little LED up anyway, sits on the corner of my dash by the bottom of the A-pillar.
