How-To: repair Magnumintake Motor
How-To: repair Magnumintake Motor
It seems that the Magnumintake Motors will die sometimes.
They stuck and the "butterflys" won´t move anymore.
Special thanks to eddie from our german forum who has gone through that short time before me.
The reason for the defect is a chrome surface on the magnet which will come off sometimes.
Then the motor won´t move enough or at all and the butterflys won´t either.
You can easily repair that by disassembling the motor, no special tools needed.
You can remove the spring on top if you like, but there is no need to.
If you do so, be carefully not to brake the plastik where it sits.
Cut that 4 plastiknoses to remove the back cover.
Partnumber
Here we see the cause, a lot magnetic crumbs
Lift the lower spring from its mount carefully and don´t brake the "ring" as I did - it is no ring
Then lift the cab very carefully
My fault
I marked the position of the cap and the axle, don´t know if important later
Now simply press the axle/ rotor (but again - very carefully. It suddenly flips out quick once you got over the magnetic power which holds it)
The rotor with the damaged chrome surface (and a little bearing, don´t loose it)
Now after I cleaned all up. I used a cloth first, then compressed air to blow all the chrome and ferric crumbs away.
By using compressed air pay careful attention to protect your eyes from flying particles !
clean rotor with bearing
Next step is to find a suitable color to protect the magnet from wareout as the originally chromelayer is lost.

Very nice! I wonder how many got tossed that could have been fixed. Being they are no longer sold, this is good info to have.

You could get some black zip ties, and a soldering iron to re "weld" them back in place.

as I haven´t been sure, if and when my intake is working, I tried today.
First I connected the motor directly a few times to hear, if something happens. And it did.
Then with engine running.
You will hear a plainly clicking noise, when the butterflies a forced to open and close. With engine running you will further hear a slightly different engine sound.
At least this is, what I heard on mine.

Later I installed a test lamp instead of the intakemotor to see, under which conditions the intakemotor is activated usually and found (sure, for those who studied this thing, it´s not new, for all the other, it probably is...) there is absolutely only power to it above 5000 rpm and with WOT (wide-open-throttle). And absolutely WOT, means first attempts I never pushed the gaspedal hard enough so that the light wasn´t shown very often
