Sweet. I have been wondering how I could make one up for my car. I know you can buy a setup for WJ's but figured no one cared about the neon enough to make one.

I just did this mod also. It is definitely worth the $5. Also I wanted to add that I had a smaller vent mesh on the right side that I also put the filter on. You can also add a little air freshener spray to the filter and you have a built in air freshener. I sprayed mine and let it dry over night. Works great, thanks to the OP.
I have a 2000 and the method was the exact same, so I am not sure about the 03+ in the title.

Question-
You know how "normal" house HVAC setup has all its return air vents merging into one main return and then goes through a filter before it hits the coolant "grille"? wouldnt there be something similar in a car- ie all the return air paths merge into one before being heated / conditioned? if so, wouldnt it be ideal to put the filter there?

You would need to locate the inlet in the cabin. It would only apply on recirculate, which basically shuts the outside inlet off, pulling air from inside the car. IDK if it would even be worth it. Unless you use "max A/C" a lot.

What a brilliant idea for an in-cabin filter. I'll be putting a filter in this weekend. Living in the desert (Tucson Arizona) I definitely
get dusty inside. I know alot of new cars have" in-cabin" filters and I like clean air and no dust inside the car, but never thought about something like this. Thanks for the brilliant idea and instructions.

Word. I turned on my A/C for the first time this season last week and got a facefull of crap! All the pollen from spring time was just collecting there waiting to blast me.

I have seen them in almost every hardware store iv been in, make sure you dont get the short ones tho.
One thing i did notice tho "90 days of filtration" is what its used for in the house right? houses need them constantly.
Cars would only use them while on and driving right?
So really the "life" of the filter can be pushed for a while i owuld think.

Thanks for the Directions
Just did this filter on my 04 SXT. OMG that was so easy. Had not had a filter for cabin. I am sure this will help, plus I had not taken that piece off the car since buying it 11/06, and judging from all the dirt in the space in front of that grate I don't think the previous owner ever did either. Didn't put any frangrance on it for now. Just wanted to get the air filtered. Will think about scent next time I change it out. Thanks for the how-to. BTW, cost for filter 12 pack at WalMart - 2.97

This is the easiest thing to do ever. I did it in 5 minutes for both vents large and small. I can't wait to enjoy the better air. My allergies suck.

You should see the inside of my car after I do body work loliskyfly wrote:Right-o, thanks. I was trying to think of a way of pulling out the dust in the cabin air. Yes I do vacuum my car but it seems that after a few days there is dust on the dash and when I get in the car you can dust flying everywhere...
Any other filter choices for this mod?
Something more durable that will last longer than 3 month? (and not block flow too much).
I am going to look at different cabin air filters in auto stores to see if any is close enough to be modded for us.

The filter life will vary greatly, depending on the operating environment. One that filters less will last longer. But only because it will catch less. If you made a different duct, that you could somehow fit a larger surface area filter to, then it would last longer. But that would take some extreme creative effort.

I imagine there is little to no difference in the life span of 2gn neons in this area. A 2000 might be different as they have a uniqueness all to them selves.
