tire noise

Post by supermike » Fri Jan 09, 2009 11:55 pm

A few weeks ago I rotated my tires front to back. The fronts were getting down to near the wear bars, and the backs still had reasonable tread. Now my car has never been what I would call quiet, but it seems I have a new, annoying hum worst at 40-45 mph. It's definitely the tires, because it doesn't change when I put it in neutral and coast. Do they need balanced, or is it just something I'll have to deal with until they get worn to their new positions? Is it possible that I need an alignment?

FYI: The tires with the best tread should be on the back.

Just buy new tires.

Yes, you have no control of the rear end. If you are going around a wet turn with bald tires on the back, the back end will slide.

Tirerack did a study on it.

True, I guess that does make sense. I've never had my back end slide though, besides on ice. Maybe I don't drive fast enough.

EDIT: But then again, Tire Rack IS trying to sell tires...

It was semi proven. A guy with an SRT wanted to put the tires with more tread on the front, I told him not to. You can imagine how bald the front tires were, I mean he had an SRT and had fun with it.

The next time it rained he went around a turn a hair fast and totaled the car.
