Perhaps you should try reading when you do this research...

You cannot have more of a contact patch because:

A) You have less tire tread that CAN touch the ground and

B) The edge of the tread is pulled off the ground so the tire can sit on the rim

The reason the drifters do it is so there is less tire and they can spin them more easily. That does NOT make it safer.

and id imagine camber would affect contact patch more than stretching tire.

fact of the matter is its a style thing for the most part, stretching tires has been around for alot longer than most people think, at least since the mid seventies in europe. and you can have a wider contact patch with a slightly stretched tire, the reason drifters stretch tire is not for less contact, its for a stiffer sidewall and less tire deformation on cornering. what you are refering to is having a lot or camber, which can reduce the amout of tire in contact with the road, a small amount of camber is a good thing in making a car more responsive through corners, but it can be taked too far.can stretching be dangerous?? yes it can, IF it is done to the extreme that it loses bead from normal driving and rough streets etc. it is just like everything else, review the FACTS and work from there, talk to people who have done it, not ones that think the know it all and you and everyone else on the road will die and they have a special spot in hell if you do a mild stretch. the fact is there have been very few if any actual cases of stretching being deadly. and i can say this because i have been into researching this for over two years before starting to dive into this myself, sorry for the long post. now bring the hate bitches

As for it being safe, well... even Honduh Tech says no go. Not to mention the fact that you are going against highly intelligent engineers who say what rim width you should use. If they are designing tires for a certain width and you're not using them properly, then yes, they are absolutely more prone to failure. The same goes for using a tire that's too wide for the wheel you are using.

yes but most of those examples have alot more stretch than i was implying that you should use, i was saying a mild stretch, something like this

sullygully's car perfect stretch and fitment on a neon imo

Image

vs this, looks cool but i won't coment on it being safe, cause it isn't imo

Image

when i do my stretch( one day) it will be along the lines of sully's car, just enough to get that flush fitment look without going over board and looking retarded in many cases, i hope i am not contradicting anything said proir to this post, i should have been clearer and posted these pics when i was defending stretching, sound good to you Sean??

oh and that clown prison sex thing is messing with my head lol

No it doesn't sound good, simply because while doing a mild stretch is better than a retarded one, it's still going against what tire manufacturers recommend. They know much better than any of us what is safe, so I don't see how you can say it is still safe when they say it isn't?

No offense, TJ, you seem like an intelligent guy (more so than most of the people on this site nowadays at least) but you are in no way smarter than an engineer...

And the clown prison sex thing was meant to mess with your head, haha.

i am not presuming to be smarter than engineers but i can't help but think that the recommendations also factor in the liability due to a lawsuit because of some dumb ass doing something that resulted in tire failure and death or injury, i think( and this is a educated statement taking into account the mathematical principles affecting sidewall strength and flexibility) that most of today's tires will handle a "mild" stretch without catastrophic failure, however i am also open to the possibility that i am wrong, but i think alot more testing and time will prove who is right and wrong, or if it even matters. just don't want you to think that i am sticking up for the kool kids on the block and not thinking about it from a safety perspective, and factoring in the many variables that keep our cars safely on the road

and here is a pic for ya

Awesome pic!

As far as testing, I'm sure the tire engineers and such have done said tests, which is why they conclude that stretching puts more stress on the sidewalls, creating more heat which will lead to failure.

you may very well be right, but(and isn't there always a 'but'?) i stand by my statements, so for now how bout we call it a draw? i have enjoyed this though, got me thinking, which 2gn doesn't do very often anymore

You mean you're not butthurt over something I said? ZOMG! It is nice to have intelligent debate occasionally instead of everybody whining that you don't agree with them.

You're still wrong though, and I win.

haha you no win, i win you watch, you see, i win...

i know man, people get to upset, they don't enjoy a debate, just act like kids, i love debates its food for the mind

You guys are idiots. I know something was spelled wrong in these posts, and since I'm commenting on the matter, I'm right (right Sean?). So everyone in this thread can STFU. Stretching tires IS safe, IS cool, and IS recommended. Kthxbai.

I mean, they pay $$ for them, and on 3 days a week they are for sale to the public. They offer a measly $250,000 for the manufacturing plant, though.

Like, stretching tires is just as safe as putting a 235 tire on a 6.5 inch rim.

It's different. When you put a 165 tire on a 8" wheel, you risk popping it off the bead. And you can only put wide tires on a small rim to a point. You do lose your contact patch quite a bit doing it. As long as the sidewall is tall enough you'll be fine.

Both things are retarded is my point.
