205/55/15 is a popular size. You wouldn't want to go wider, imo.
Stock size is 185/60/15

Why not wider?? Just curious to know why it wouldn't be a good idea

If you go any wider you will decrease your contact patch due to rounding the tread.
For every tire there is a recommended rim width in the specifications.

You can go slightly wider if you keep a higher sidewall. The widest you can go on a 6" rim is 225, but only in a 60 series tire. If you shorten the side wall there will not be enough rubber to "fold in" so the bead safely seats.
The type of tire you get will affect things to. What type/brand of tire are you looking at?
*Edit* I just checked a 225/50/15 and it shows that it will work on a 6" rim

^^^no shit.
I would have said you were an idiot if you hadn't said you checked
I'd never put a 225 width tire on a 6" rim, it may seat properly but you won't get the full contact patch.

Bite me commie boy
The brand of tire I checked before didn't list a 225/50, so neener neener.
But I'm with Frank as far as fitment. Just because it will doesn't mean you should.

Is there a site I can look at all this?? Preciate the info guys. I'm just sick of all these stretched tires with crazy offset wheels & huge amounts of camber. I'm trying to get a tall enough tire for a decent white wall. Was curious how wide i could go

Hey Bro, look several threads down. I asked about a "more sporty tire size" on factory rims. Everyone says 205/55's. They provide pics too. That's what I bought and they're awesome.

205/55 isn't going to work with what Dan wants to do.
If you can clear them and you aren't concerned about the speedo/odo being off, I'd look into 215/60 or 215/65 tires, maybe even 205/70. That will give you good width and the sidewall should be tall enough to not mess with the contact patch.
