Which wheels?

Post by 04R/T » Wed Apr 18, 2012 6:17 pm

Once again its time to replace the tires on the R/T, going to get new wheels at the same time. The Stern wheels I have on now, even though they were made on Japan, are heavy pieces of crap. I'm looking for something that's light and not made in China. Also they have to be 16" So I've narrowed it down to 2 wheels. I'm not thrilled with the looks of the RPF1, however it's the weight I'm interested in. The sub 14# weight of the RPF1's is a plus, but I think the Ultraleggra's look better. They weigh 1 pound more than the RPF1's, and they cost about the same. Tires are going to be 225/45 BFG's.

What would you get?

Personally I like these:

I am not sure if you can get the right offset tho. I was looking at these for my other car. 15-16lbs depending on the width.

but if i had to pick between the two id say the OZ rims. sucks that they are so expensive tho.

Yeah I like those, in fact they were on the short list but dropped off when I decided to stay with 16" wheels. They do come in 17x7.5 with a 38 offset which is right for Neon. Around here though the roads are terrible, you need to run at least a 225/45/17 tire on them, something that has some sidewall or they'll get bent in no time. To run that size means the Neon spring perches most likely won't cooperate, so it's SRT struts or coil overs. Then there's the performance that is lost with the taller tire..

When I finally retire this car from commuter duty, it will get the SRT swap that's been sitting in the garage for a few years now. Along with the swap, it will get 17" wheels.

Since your looking into light weight wheels, have you looked into traklites? I prefer the v1 5 spoke opposed to the v2 6 spoke. Just throwing it out there.

Yes, I looked at the Traklite 1's, I believe they may even be slightly lighter than RPF1's. Only place i can find new ones that are reasonably priced however is on e bay and then only matt black. These are #3 on the list, if i couldn't get the other two, i'd get these. I found them in 16x7 with a 42 offset.

Just an update, went with the Ultraleggras and BFG KDW's in 225/45/16. Nice fit, smooth ride and they look good IMO, I like them. 8)

Thanks.

Yeah, I did lower the back enough to get rid of the rake that these cars come with but i don't know, the front lip sometimes scrapes on driveway entries as it is now. Lower it on 16's and i don't think i could get the car into some the places i go now. I do have a new set of Hotchkis springs stashed away in case some 17's go on one day...
