need new tires... not sure what to do

Post by hotrodlarry » Tue Sep 11, 2012 10:48 am

I need some new tires for my '02 SXT. I originally wanted a set of 205/55r15's but some of the tires in that size are a little pricey. I looked at 195/55r15 and found some tires that are more affordable. Worse case scenario I can stay with the stock size ( 185/60r15) for now because the local tire shops have that size in stock and I can upgrade later.

What would you do?

That's what I'm gonna do. I stopped at a couple local tire shops and they didn't have anything in stock for some odd reason. I even went to Walmart to ask about some tires I saw on their website and they said they had no idea what I was talking about.

Nothing wrong with the stock size tire. A decent tire in stock size will perform just well for a daily driver.

Plus in the winter the narrower tire will perform better in snow.

Meh, my 205 50 16 winter tires out performed the 185 65 14's I used to run. Both were winter tires. I don't do all season. The 205 50's have much better grip on ice, and light snow, and I didn't have near the issues in the deeper stuff I thought I would.

Last year when leaving Flint, it was snowing, and icy. I easily left a 300C in the dust entering the highway. Should have seen the look on that guy's face. Traction control fail. Were my tires making 100% grip? Not really, but I was still getting way more power to the ground.

Well, it's close enough to winter that I can get by with a couple used tires until then.I scored a pair of 185/60r15's off craigslist for $40 and they have tons of tread left to them.Gonna use the set of snow tires I have during the winter and the new summer tires can wait 'til next year I guess.
