I have seen this one asked a few times, so another tidbit to add to the engine FAQ's:
DOHC boots are shorter than SOHC boots.
If it was a race only app, you could trim the dirt seal, and the DOHC wires may reach the plugs on a SOHC engine. (Or if you really didn't care about looks/crap getting in the tube.)
On the flip side...
SOHC boots will "work" on a DOHC, but they will stick up above the VC where the dirt seal seats. So there is no effective dirt seal. They will work in a pinch, or for diagnostic purposes.
