As far as hoses go, read this first...


While I had a P0453 small leak detected, it can quickly become a larger leak.

I had same code replaced gas cap and solenoid and still got it come to find out had a hole in my charcol canister plugged it with jb weld now its all good. If you reset the code you will need to wait a little the computer only checks when fuel tank is between 75 and 25 % capacity and the engine has been running for so long.

when you mention charcoal canister, are you referring the the NVLD unit near the rear wheel?

Was the hole on the unit itself or one of he hoses?

The charcoal canister is the big square box in front of the RR wheel

So back to my P0441, 2004 Neon SE.

I checked the hoses from the throttle body, brake booster etc... as much as I can. EXCEPT for portion of the hose that runs under the length of the car from the purge solenoid under the hood to the Evap canister on the rear. Portions of this is not visible. I would think it's not a hose but one of those plastic lines. Also removed the purge solenoid and reinstalled.

On the rear, I removed the Evap canister & the NVLD pump and checked the hoses and the electrical connector on the pump. They all seem visibly good.

Now any thoughts on what I check/change next?

Between the purge solenoid and the NLVD pump, what goes bad more often?

You would need someone that worked at a dealer to get that kind of info. I doubt there are many folks on here that document which emissions parts fail more than others.

So now after I removed the NVLD pump & tapped etc on it... :) I get P0440 & P0441 (that existed before).

Does these two codes affect anything? gas mileage?

My emission test isn't till Feb and that too they allow up to one reediness monitor not set/not ready.

So today the codes/cel light went off by itself. Don't know if it was my cleaning of the NLVD that fixed it.

Like I read somewhere here, look like keeping the gas tank 1/4 filled for a long time perhaps gave way to too much vapor and lead to this!. I filled up 2 days ago and it's now fine :) dang!

P0441 has been on since July. I reset it 3 days ago and it came back in this morning after about 50 miles. I am due for inspection in a month here in NC and it will fail if MIL is on.

I am told that one emission related monitor not ready is allowed per state rules. So can I reset the battery, drive for like 40 miles and get it inspected?

Question: Shall I try changing the purge solenoid first, followed by changing the NVLD?

So far:
1. I have visually inspected the gas cap and cleaned the O-ring.
2. I have visually checked the hoses that connect into the evap canister and the NVLD on the rear. However I couldn't check those hoses that disappear into the top of the gas tank!.
3. I have visually checked the hoses under the hood that connect to the purge solenoid.

Edit: dealer wants $110 for diag.

Also, I noticed that there are separate codes for a leak. So does 0441 point to the NVLD or the purge solenoid?
