Alot of exhaust soot. What be it?

Is your car throwing codes or are you having a hard time passing your state or county emission test? Ask how to fix it here.

Unless the exhaust smells pig rich, it is relatively normal. My '01 has never had a clean pipe. It gets near 40 MPG on the highway, so I am not too concerned.

If your o2 sensor is not setting a code/CEL, it isn't bad enough that emissions are affected. You could install a new o2 sensor, it may help, it may not.

If you have over 50,000 miles, it is recommended.

I ran mine well over 150,000 miles before changing it. I got a little better throttle response, but that was the only thing that changed. I didn't get any better fuel mileage, the exhaust is still black.
