CAT options....time to do exhaust?

Post by Nathan9790 » Tue May 06, 2014 10:41 pm

Hey guys...so im throwing a P0420....CAT issues...so what are my options regarding power gains for my 2001 SE? Should i get a regular brand cat or switch to a magnaflow cat?

Also, which is overall better, a weld in or a bolt on?

thanks and sorry for all the questions

If you could find an OE cat in good shape, I'd go that route. It's easiest as far as bolt-on affairs. Aftermarket ones are all going to need welded in (for the most part) and your sensor still may be finicky with some of the readings.

If you go with a weld in unit, get a weld in flex joint with a 2.5" minimum ID, and cut the factory flex joint off.

Also, for information's sake, it is illegal to install a used cat from another same, or different car. You probably won't find one in a JY partially because of this. They cannot sell you one. The value of the platinum is likely the real reason.

Good information OD. I knew JYs don't sell them, but never knew why. Or that there was a law on used cats. Heavily enforced, eh

Well unless the cat is drastically different looking than what should be on there, and it passes a sniffer test, who is going to know?

I'd like to see an inspector prove the thing was from a different car, especially if it was from the same model and year.

There are probably not a lot of shops that will risk the fines doing it, so it is mainly a backyard thing, so it's kinda tough to regulate...

So what should i replace that flex joint with? just another pipe? Also that high flow cat, it has an O2 sensor port yes?

Replace it with a weld in flex joint.

The magnaflow was a direct fit, so yes it had the 1/2 o2 bung.

how does that flex joint go on to replace the origional one? I asked my mechanic if he could do that and he said no. Should i just pull one off a junker and put it on to replace it?

Pictures of how it would be welded on would be GREATLY appreciated

Why he said no I can't tell you, but what pictures do you need? Replace the existing flex joint with a new one. It's pretty self-explanatory once you look at the old one or pull the old cat off.

Try a muffler shop ... a good one has experience fabricating custom exhaust, and expert welders ... this isn't general mechanic work.
