Thanks. I try to keep it interesting and fun to look at by posting lots of pics vs talking.

Heres another update:

Not clear coated. I think I'm going to clear coat it. Hoping it can get a nice thick coat on it to protect it. ImageImageImageImage

Unless you can get some hardener and mix it with the clear, It likely won't hold up more than 3 to 5 years if you're lucky.

Rattle can clear and even moderate heat just don't get along too well, unless you can get the stuff with hardener mixed in the can.

I would at least get some hadener from TSC, and some brush on clear. Mix the hardener with the clear, and brush it on.

I would get a disposable container to mix it in, so you only mix what you need for each coat. The hardender is only good for a few hours, and then the paint is junk after that if not applied.

Yeah I had already cleared it the other day before I read this. Oh well. I don't expect it to last long.

I keep telling myself it's not a show car so idc how good it turned out or not. Haha. I kind of wish now I would of just left it alone and not painted anything.

Finally completed a much needed upgrade. And that is going from the 95-96 style metal gas tank 11.5 Gal to the 2gn plastic 12.5 gallon. ImageImage

Man, that old tank looked sketchy. Seems like a nice upgrade.

Just to avoid confusion for newbies, since the 1gn '97 - '99 plastic tank is not entirely the same as a '00 to '05 2gn tank. A 2gn tank will fit just fine, BUT the fuel inlet nipple is smaller on a 2gn tank. You would need to make some sort of adapter to get the 1gn filler neck couple to the 2gn tank inlet.

The tank pictured is a '97 to '99 tank. I understand what Manny meant, but some folks may not...

Also, I forgot if I checked, I don't think I did, if the '00 to '05 tank straps would work on a plastic tank 1gn. But other than the filler neck difference, the plastic tanks are compatible in all years, if you want to get creative.

I was lost the first time I took it apart a few years ago. But when you do it over a couple times it's easy. This will be my 4th time having everything apart. Hopefully the last time for a good while.

Yes I know. I'm hoping to be there. Trying to get the last little bit done on the neon. Then I'm daily driving it as much as I can until Carlisle so I know everything works and runs good. I'm behind on having it done. I was hoping to have it done already but it's not.

Not much left to do. Just a handful of things. Thus is where I'm currently at with it.

Put timing belt on, time it.
Put alternator belt back on.
Harmonic balancer pulley back on.
Put turbo back in the manifold.
Cut and fit the hotside pipe underneath
Bolt on intercooler and front bumper. And basically done. Image

Anyone out there. Hello. Haha.

More updates. Almost ready to start. Have to find time to put the final touches on. Heres the engine bay almost done. Looks a hell of alot better with the hotside pipe underneath the engine.

And there's the final fitment of the new intercooler. I love it. Can't wait to see it on the ground and in the sun. ImageImage

Looks a lot cleaner under the hood. You should throw some gold heat shielding on the firewall to match the trans paint.

I thought about adding the gold heat shielding. That or having my valve cover powder coated gold.
The Red on the valve cover has seen better days. It's powdercoated but a really old coat. Like at least 10yrs old.

And finally. Another thing done that I've wanted for a long time. A regular neon center console instead of my acr one which had no arm rest, extra storage space or 3rd cup holder. Image

2gn center console FTW.

I have to admit, having both the 2gn console, and the '00-'02 steering wheel in my '99, it has a pretty close feel to my '01 in the interior.

I like it a lot.

So that's what a 7 grand tach cluster looks like.

All the one's I have seen went to 8.

One can only assume the SOHC cars got the 7's and the DOHC's got the 8's.

Hmmm, I also noticed the cluster has stops at just over 7 thousand, and 120 mph.

I'll have to look later to see if my cluster has those.

Yes a 8k tach cluster has the stops as well. I looked at my old cluster picture.
I had to settle for this 7k tach one because it's all could find at the time.
It's fine with me tho. I never go above 6500rpm anyways. Definitely no need for 8k tack rpm reading.
That is my original odometer reading tho. 126k miles and 22 years old, now so bad. Image

I've never owned a 1st gen, so it's always funny to me to see the 2nd gen console mounted in there. Looks right at home! Much more functional than the original.

Since the DOHC was rev limited to 7200, I guess it just made sense to make it 8000 rpm. 7500 would have looked a bit odd.

But yeah, for most of us, anything over 7000 is kinda not needed. Especially if you have a 2.4.

I'm thinking the 2gn clusters don't have the stops. Maybe where my mind got fuzzy...

Well, fuzzier than normal.

Yeah, I recall when I hit 1st instead of 3rd, and the tach bounced around quite a bit. Damn oem shifter bushings anyways. Fortunately I found a couple neon sites and learned that slop in the shifter could be cured... I still don't know what held the clutch/flywheel/engine together. It was a pretty scary sound, buzzing those rpms with your foot in the throttle. Just wasn't meant to be doing 65 plus in first.

^hahahaha

So now I have an issue with the neon. So I filled the gas tank up, went to connect the positive cable on the battery and open the drivers door to put key in and prime the line and as soon as I opened the door the boost gauge and afr gauge lit up. I'm like why in the world did that light up. So now I have to chase down some weird electrical issue that I never had before I took it apart. Only electrical thing I messed with was the positive cable which I ran a new one.

I have voltage at battery.
Battery in my trunk.
I have voltage at the end by the fuse box but and here's the fun part. When I connect it to the fuse box it's like the voltage disappears and is routed to the boost gauge and afr gauge. Cooo Cooo pos neon.

I the only ground that I can think of being maybe bad would be the one on the lower starter bolt which goes to negative cable. Maybe me painting the trans made it useless. But I didn't get paint or anything in the side the ground is on.

Either way I haven't tested that ground spot yet. I will and report back tomorrow.

And I figured the issue out. The new battery ground I had in the trunk was in a bad spot. Moved it over to where the original cable was grounded too and all is good. Got the car to start. Everything's great. Runs smooth. Idles fine. No leaks. Good to go.

After I have a chance to wash her up I'll snap some better outside pictures of the engine and intercooler.

And I'm back with a video. She purrs like a kitten. As usual don't forget to change video quality to the best option as I know sometimes it doesn't automatically play in best quality.
