What route to take with my Daily Driver?

Post by gninja21 » Sun Apr 01, 2007 2:55 pm

I want to mke my car faster but since I drive it everyday for work and errands.

If I went turbo I would go the SRT turbo route, if I went all-motor I would convert it into a R/T.

I own a 2000 Dodge Neon just to give you ideas.

Go all motor. Probably cheaper on gas and more reliable.

might as well go turbo, you don;t have to crank the boost if you dont want to. Also if you go the Magnum swap route, you KNOW you wont be satisfied and will end up upgrading to turbo anyway. Save the time and money and do it right the first time.

Are you Automatic or Manual? If you are Auto you might as well swap the SRT motor/tranny in there. If u are manual, you also might as well swap the SRT motor/tranny in there and call it a day. :P

U'll never be as fast all motor as u will with a turbo.

For Turn key and go reliability - N/A
For spirited driving and under hood tuning - Forced induction

No matter wich way you go, you will end up wanting more power eventually. But for reliability you cant beat N/A...

just remember, the more mods you do to a car, chances are the less reliable it becomes

Well not really i know plenty of people that mod cars as much as they can and im not talkin little stuff and 99.99% of the time there is absolutely no problems with any of their cars because they know how to work on them and 2 they know their limits

well either you didnt build it strong enough so it could take you abusing it or you just beat the shit out of it too much by not doing maintenance on it stock neons are not made for turbo's nor are they race cars but if you build it so it is able to take a beating like your supposed to not just bolt up a turbo and expect it to be perfect with stock internals i know there are people that do it and run low psi but is it really worth it?? for 2000 bucks u can learn how to rebuild an engine or have somebody rebuild it for you and put aftermarket internals in it and have a bitchin n/a motor and u wont have to worry about blowin it apart

If you have a second car to drive around while your dd is out ot commision, I would definately go turbo.

If you have about 2 to 3k lyin' around also.

i say go N/A for a DD.

if you really want a turbo car buy a project car and build it up. if you get some higher compression pistons, a new computer, a hotter cam, a mag intake and mag head, lighter rods and the other standard goodies you will have a car with some good pep to it.

The SRT motor is already fortified with all the goodies to make it reliable enough to be a daily-driver motor. That would be my decision maker right there.

I guess i should have asked this first..how much money are u looking to spend?

If u have 5+ grand sitting around u can upgrade the stock Neon engine and have a nice boost setup, but not everyone has 5 grand to throw around. :P

Heck, if u've got 5 grand to throw into it do something different and go NA. U probably still won't be close to boost numbers, but ur car will be special. :P

And honestly, even with an upgraded bottom end OR SRT engine, things are still not foolproof. Take Refect for instance, he swapped the SRT motor in his car and now he's having to rebuild it.

Modifying cars isn't cheap or easy. :P

Wow - I can not believe how close this is  for a DD I would say turbo, but all motor is FUN. I voted turbo and broke the current tie, so whatever...

I'd go turbo
You'll be able to go faster for less. You can easily run 7 psi on stock motor.
Either way you go to make it fast and reliable it's going to cost you.

I say go turbo also. Be sure that when you do your set up, you do it right the first time. It sucks when your car decides to take a crap on you right as your driving to somewhere important....like work. Do some more homework, and take a weekend to do this. Maybe a 4 day weekend if possible to work out most if not all the bugs. Good luck.

well the reason I say 2k-5k is because if i go turbo I'll aim to be around 4K for a budget. If I go all motor I was thinking of doing it in small chunks. not randomly but like camshaft, cam gear, valve springs and then etc.

most of the labor will be done by me and a friend w/ some beer. to tune we will be doing a dyno day. so really its beer and dyno fees. I do like to assume the worst though that way i have some "insurance" of some kind.

Then stick with N/A....
Forced induction is going to require fuel and spark control, more fuel, plumbing, etc....
Where as the N/A bolt on motor, you can grab used magnum parts and bolt on, cams, ignition, etc and just go. Of course fuel control will help when you cross that path.
Forced induction is not a bolt on weekend project and drive your car to work that monday without issues...tuning,etc.....
People have turbo'd or done SRT swaps here for years and there is probably not one person that can tell you that you can have it done in a weekend and be alset and ready for work on monday. Im also taking into consideration that your not working on it for the straight 48hrs through the weekend either.
Stick with N/A....less headaches for a daily driver.....

Wait, by "SRT Turbo", are we talking about turbo-ing a 2.0L or doing a direct SRT swap?? There's a big difference between the two.

Im not sure how wild you want to take the car, since i drive a DD Srt thats puts down 472 whp, and its nothing but headaches so well take my opinion for what it is. Ive been messing around with cars for as long as i remember. My greatest achievement so far was a nice 408 stroker in a forest green 92 Mustang Lx, wich busted my pockets and forced to sell. Now im not saying im the oldest or best mechanic, but from what i learned "" Do not try to make a race car out of a daily driver " ... it just doesnt work. No matter how well you built it up or tuned it, something is always going to happen, since your pushing the tolerances of the car. Not just engine wise, but whole car wise. The people saying running N/A is better are either talking about a very mild bolt on n/a setup, like intake, exhaust and what other bolt on ,or have never dealt with a fully built N/A car. There just as finicky as a turbo car. You still need fuel, spark, timing adjustments. Also more tuning comes into play cause with N/A your trying to squeeze any little amount of air into the engine. So cam timing , porting, bla bla bla. Sorry for the rant just giving my personal expierence. So if you're going to be building up a car, first thing you should have money for is a beater, trust me on that, car rentals get damn expensive.

I have a 95 Neon base with 160,000 miles on it. IIt just needs a new radiator, thermostat and for me to put it back together. It doesnt go fast or anything but it will tide me over.

I think N/A is going to be my route, I might do a magnum conversion or just go with a Crane 12 or 14, long tube header, intake manifold, larger throttle body, crane valve springs, thermal R&D R/t muffler, lower it( not sure on which struts or springs yet) and thats about it. I know I might be missing something
