Wierd noise on acceleration.. (Now with video)
Occasionally, when driving around town, during acceleration my '00 ES makes a noise from the engine compartment that sounds like a chain rattling. It's only during acceleration, never during steady driving, and I haven't noticed it during deceleration yet.
Anyone know what the problem might be? I haven't seen another topic that addresses this specific problem, but maybe I didn't look for the right keywords or whatever.
Anyhoo, any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have no idea what you are talking about. So here is me thinking about that picture of a rabbit with a pancake on its head.

In town I don't tend to WOT, unless I'm at a redlight and the granny next to me had got on my nerves But anyways, it's under what I would call medium acceleration.
At the moment, I have no mods other than the muffler.

do you shift pretty early? the tranny will make some strange noises if you shift unusually early, especially if you give it a decent amount of throttle. the sounds are normal, but its hard on the engine and tranny to bog like that, so simply adjusting your shift point closer to 3k rpm and easing onto the throttle when shifting early will fix this issue. Otherwise, it could be a clutch/tranny problem of a different sort.

Inspect the heat shields for rattling. They rust through/deteriorate and rattle.

Ok, here's a quick video I did. You have to listen carefully - around the 25 second mark you'll hear a sound like a chain rattling.

you said you had your exhaust modified, did you get a cat back? Did who ever installed it use the U clamps? If so maybe the clamp is backing off and vibrating. And i didnt hear any chain like noise around the 25second mark in your vid. maybe i just need to listen on another computer. GL with the problem tho.
sounds more like a powertrain problem than an engine problem, are you 100% sure its coming from the engine compartment and not from a wheel, like your bearings for example, also when was your tranny fluid changed too, on my auto i changed it at 35k and it almost needed a change but not quite yet, but i did it anyway, you can tell by the color of your fluid, if its brown.. its time for a change... the fluid has to be red
also turn you key on and off 3 times to get a list of error codes that might help too

This is the same scenario with my car. If you shift and your down around 2000rpm and you give it somewhere around half throttle, you get that ssssshhhhhh noise, then it fades away by the time you get up to about 2800rpm. When I first bought it, I wasn't sure if it was the transmission. I got my transmission replace with a brand new unit at 34k and the noise is exactly the same. 71k miles now, noise is still there. With the way I've driven it in that period of time, I'm really not concerned much anymore .OB wrote:do you shift pretty early? the tranny will make some strange noises if you shift unusually early, especially if you give it a decent amount of throttle. the sounds are normal, but its hard on the engine and tranny to bog like that, so simply adjusting your shift point closer to 3k rpm and easing onto the throttle when shifting early will fix this issue. Well I can't shift early, it's an automatic
Even so... it seems to do it in every gear as long as it's not either wide open or scared granny throttle.
As for the sound at the start, it's actually a bag of stuff I bought at KMart not 5 minutes previous, falling over because I made a right turn.

I think it is your heat shield right behind on the exhaust be i look at mine this weekend and in was just sitting on there with two bolts in top only none in bottom but am not going to worry i change my oil and everything look good and trans loooks good so i think go with your gut and do what it tells you.
