darrell cox 2.0 to 2.2 to 2.6l sohc stroker saga
i thought some of you might like an update. i've attached pics of the completed direct port nitrous install. so, the motor is ready to go in. i finally pulled the old motor out last night 8/05. i still have some wiring and carbon fabbing to do, as well as install the lsd. but, hopefully we'll have her up and running in a couple of weeks.

well, it's taken almost a year, but the 2.2 stroker that darrell has been building for me is finally on it's way. the shipping company picked it up this morning. should have pics of it next week to show everyone. just in case everyone has forgotten, this motor is a 2.2 stroker with mag head and fully forged internals. darrell and i are shooting for the magical 200whp mark n/a. it's parts include;
knife edged, ion nitrided stroker crank by castillo in ca
lightened, balanced eagle rods
lightened, recut 10.5:1 frp je pistons
wacko darrell cox d ported magnum head
1mm os rev valves
crane springs and retainers
005 crane "nasty cam"
canton oil pan with darrell's windage tray and crank scraper
blueprinted adjustable oil pump
r/t ernie box intake with direct port n2o
fast fabs v2 stepped header, ceramic coated by calico
fidanza aluminum fw and 6 puck ceramic clutch
24 accel injectors
pan evac system
the motor is new from top to bottom. i'll also be adding my aem cam gear, udp, screamin demon coil, magnecor wires, 60mm tb, solid motor and trans mounts, 2.5" dynomax exhaust, afx/r pcm, etc. stay tuned for the details. keep your fingers crossed b/c after the work that darrell says he put into this motor it should top 200whp on sohc head and block.
d shaped magnum exhaust
ported magnum intake-compare the caliper to the stock intake
stock exhaust
stock intake-compare the caliper to the ported mag one
i haven't finished the direct port set-up, nor have i got the adjustable cam gear or udp on the motor. but, it will take me a while to get all of that together so i thought i'd throw these pics out for the time being. lmk what ya'll think.

ooh...there's a glimmer of the dream left!!!
xonn, over on the other org is the closest i've heard of reaching 200whp on a 2.0 block and sohc head. he hit 198 with old plugs and a hot motor. differences b/w he and i are that he was running 12:1 compression and was a std 2.0 while i am running 2.2 displ and 10.5:1. the bump in displ should more than make up for the drop in compression. plus darrell swears that he's put at least as much r&d into the head work on my motor as he does into his own race motors. everything in this motor has been done for max hp numbers. the oil pump is adjustable to allow for a couple of extra hp as the pressure is bumped down for dyno tuning. the piston skirts are ceramic coated. the combustion chamber has been reshaped, etc. the only thing that i backed off on for now is the methanol injection. i've spent enough and want to see what the motor will do as it sits for now. i may still have darrell build a custom tri-y header for it, but let's see where the numbers are first. it seems that with some effort 190whp is not difficult to attain. but, for whatever reason 200+ has been difficult. it's going to take a little while to get it installed since i've got a vacation planned and work is crazy busy right now. but, i'll post static pics as soon as everything gets here. i'm jazzed and have been ready for this motor forever!!!
ooh...there's a glimmer of the dream left!!!
i don't know how lucky i am. this motor has cost about 3x what the car is worth and is about 8mos. past it's delivery date. i will say that darrell has been easy to work with and whenever i was able to reach him he kept me up to date on progress. castillo cranks was a pain, but darrell says he won't use anyone else. just to let you know btw, the pistons weigh 1/2 of stock, the crank is 5-7lbs lighters, 2lbs were saved with the udp and the fw and clutch is b/w 10-15lbs lighter than stock. figure on the low side that i saved 20lbs in reciprocating engine mass, 30lbs on the high side!!! this thing should rev like a superbike!!!
ooh...there's a glimmer of the dream left!!!

steering wheel and gas pedal.
Sounds awesome man, I cant wait to see the final numbers on it! I have been contemplating doing all motor for up to 150-160 hp for a DD just for the fun of it

10.5:1 compression even with the afx/r is pump gas friendly.

Just out of curiosity how much did Darrel charge you? I know he gave me an astronomical quote on building a custom paddle shift system for my ATX . Granted it's a one-off piece but I'm still curious.

Im gonna take a round guess at $10k - $15k because he said 3 time what the car is worth.

including all parts, machining, etc., i'll have something around 8-9k in the motor. it's stupid. i never planned it this way, but it's just sorta snowballed!!! i will say though that with engine and suspension mods i'm into the car for around 12k. add the initial purchase price of 15k and i've got 27k in a car that has performance i couldn't go buy for that much. the only one i can think of is the 350z base model. btw i pick up the motor from the shipper today. woot.
is this a question or a statement? i posted in another thread that 10.5:1 is a safe compression to run on pump gas. i'm at something b/w 10.5:1 and 11:1 with the new motor. i would have gone higher, but b/w the afx/r pcm, pump gas and running at least a 100shot of n2o anything more would have been risky.racer12306 wrote:10.5:1 compression even with the afx/r is pump gas friendly.

That's Mucho Dinero! Then again, if it gets you where you want to be, that's priceless

its not stupid, it your hobby i know people that spend more than that in golf equipment and memberships for the course. Everyman has an expensive hobby even the girly ones...lolSGT BRAD wrote:including all parts, machining, etc., i'll have something around 8-9k in the motor. it's stupid. i never planned it this way, but it's just sorta snowballed!!!
I bet you cant wait to get that sucka installed. lol

I think this was a response to me asking if it is going to be streetable, even though it doesn't answer my question. What i want to know is if this thing is going to idle like a drag built motor, lopeing like a mofo at the verge of stall at idle.racer12306 wrote:10.5:1 compression even with the afx/r is pump gas friendly.
i am hoping that it's going to lope!!! i love that sound. since it's got so much duration, i'm sure it will lope fairly significantly. it'll be worse if i can't pull fuel at idle with the safc. i'm still concerned that running 24lb/hr injectors is going to be overkill, but we'll see. megasquirt may be in my future if i can't get things sorted with drivability issues.Wenuden wrote:I think this was a response to me asking if it is going to be streetable, even though it doesn't answer my question. oh btw...i picked up the motor from the shipper tonight. mmmm...tasty. i'll snap some pics of it once it's on the engine stand.

I dunno about the n2o tho... I would want to see what power it makes without a squeeze from the bottle. The bottle runs out. I'd want to know what it was at when it does.

it's worth waiting for it to be on the engine stand before i take pics. right now it's bolted to the crate so you can't even see the canton oil pan. be patient i'll have pics when it's ready to go. the fast fabs header looks great in the cool chrome ceramic finish. the r/t ernie intake looks sic too. it's finished in a tranluscent blue. gonna be a couple of weeks before it's installed, but i can't wait.
the motor was built to be the most you could squeeze out of an n/a sohc. the n2o is just to push over the 300hp mark and to lower the e.t.'s the only concession to the nitrous application is the lower compression ratio of the motor. it's only a point or so. maybe lost 5hp by holding back a little on the comp, but gained a lot of security. i'll dyno tune everything after break-in and run it pure n/a as well as on the bottle. if it breaks 200whp n/a and 300hp on the n2o i am going to be super happy.

Well that sounds like good forethought with the safety cushion.
You've had a lot of work done to this thing! I saw where you mentioned that it's much more $$$ than the car could ever be worth in a market sense, but then again, you aren't gonna sell this thing... you're not doing it for market value, but for a point.
You have my respect, that's for sure, and I hope you break 200hp without the nitrous
You mention a "stroker" crankshaft. What crankshaft are you using?

man im stoked to see if you meet your goal of 200whp. Thats crazy power. I wonder what a neon w/ 200whp NA would run in the 1/4. Prob somewhere in the low 14's?

mine is a reworked stock crank that has been lightend, knife edged, balanced and ion-nitrided. the ion nitride supposedly makes the crank essentially bullet-proof. we'll see. i could have bought a stroker crank from callies, but it would have been another 600.00 bucks that i'd rather budget elsewhere. darrell guarantees that the crank will hold together long after the valve-train takes a dump. i know that with the 005 cam i'll be maxxing out the afx/r pcm redline. btw i know now why the stock pcm programming is limited to 8100rpm if anyone is interested. and, lmk what ya'll think of the pics.Arro wrote:You mention a "stroker" crankshaft. i've got a 2 week vacation coming up next week. i've also got to finish putting together the direct port kit. figure on a few more weeks before i get into it good and heavy. plus since i'm doing it alone and in my spare time it's gonna take a while to complete the swap. i've also got to stick the lsd into the tranny when it's out so that'll take time as well. i'll keep everyone posted.
amm- i really hope that it'll make more than 200whp. it sounds tough to get over that mark, but if this motor won't do it then i wonder if it can be done. i only worry that i'll have to go megasquirt to control everything. not sure how well the afx/r pcm will do. we'll see. stay tuned.
