Neon/Caliber AWD
Neon/Caliber AWD
would it be possible to do a caliber r/t awd system and stick it in a neon or would that be a big challenge

I would think that it would be a big challenge.
1. There is no place to mount the stuff on a stock Neon, lots of fabrication would need to be done.
2. You would have to swap the transmission to the Neon. Whether or not it would fit, I don't know.
3. Could run into wheel issues if the bolt pattern isn't the same.

What? You don't like the wheels hanging outside the wheel well? </sarcasm, which is probably sadly wasted on some>excon wrote:I'm no expert on calibers, but it looks as if the caliber is bigger. I'm guessing the AWD system would not fit because the physical dimentions are too big for the neon; you'd have to "trim" stuff.
Whats wrong with a mexi pickup my old chevy looked like that. lolexcon wrote:That's what i was thinking would happen if you tried to put the awd system in the neon! I had an image in my head of a neon going down the road with the wheels so far away from the body it looked like a wannabe mexican pickup
But yeah sadly it was true

Just putting the world engine into a neon would be a big enough challenge. The oil filter/housing would prolly hit the radiator. Not sure on the track width, but the wheel/tire combo wouldn't fit in the wheel well w/o major trimming. If you used neon size tires it may work, but you would have some serious drag racing gearing.

One of the problems to overcome is the engine mounting style. The Calibers use a Mitsubishi mounting set-up, which means the front and rear mounts attach to the lower portion of the block and attach to the K-frame. The K-frame itself is completely different. The driveshafts are completely different as well, as are the knuckles and hubs.
And that's just on the front.
And that's just on the front.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Possible? With enough time, money, ingenuity, and patience...Yes. Worth all the trouble? No.
Just the issues outlined in the previous posts should be enough to turn you away from this one.

exactly, the caliber is a mini crossover. it's in the same class as the vibe and matrix. i don't think there are any others in that class.
however, it isn't technically a class.

AWD neon is a challenge but I have put some though to it:
Closest engine from a mounting stand point:
4g63
2.2/2.5
3.0
Closest trans:
DSM awd
Caravan awd(only atx and only on a 3.0)
Rear sub-frame:
Your making one, use rear crossmember and where the gas tank used to be as referance points. The diff is going to be about in the middle of the rear cross member
Rear Diff:
DSM makes subframe and axles easier, RX7 is stronger and easier to find
Rear Hubs:
DSM is kind of sort of similar to us they may fit need DSM rear attachment points on the struts
Now find a way to make it run and keep it cool, oh and your subframes need to be about twice as beefy as you made them, you'll find that out after your first AWD burnout attempt

That would be even better. The 3.8 should bolt in anywhere a 3.3 will. the 3.3 is a bit more compact than the 3.0 widthwise. While I liked my 3.0, the 3.3 will own it in stock form.Danteneon wrote:The AWD system was available on the 3.3 (and possibly the 3.only, not the 3.0bone-yard-racing wrote:Caravan awd(only atx and only on a 3.0)

Of course!
The 3.3/3.8 was a much more compact design as far as the block goes. And yes, the 3.3/3.8 would pwn the 3.0 all day long.

Oh, me me!Danteneon wrote:Is ok. Hell, in 1997 the Caravan had 5 different engines available for it.
For bonus points, what were the 5 different engines? (don't answer that one Chris!)
I believe that is a trick question, because as far as I know there was technically only 4 options: 2.4, 3.0, 3.3, 3.8. The 2.4 just came with the option of 3 speed or 4 speed auto.
Do I win?!

OK, OK...this is a pretty hard one mainly because the 5th option was rarely ever seen outside of government fleets.
There was an electric motor version produced for a few years. Ford had the electric Ranger, GM had an electric...something (may have been the S10) and Dodge had an electric Caravan. Very rare.
