Found something when I removed the dash cover

Post by Arro » Thu Feb 05, 2009 1:13 am

Is this what I think it is?

Image

I bought this car from my friend... when she bought it, it just came with one SKIM key. I had heard rumors that some Neons had keyless entry key fobs from the factory. I never figured an '00 would have it, figured it was a Mark II thing.

Is that what this is?

Ok so did some more searching on here, and I guess that is exactly what it is.

So the real question now is: How do I get a fob that's coded to this module?

As it stands I have NO fob. I found this on Ebay...

Image

But he says if I don't have one remote already, I'll need to contact the dealer. Anyone done that? Any idea what that will cost me?

I want to make this work.

I also saw this one on Ebay:

Image

Is this the actual factory original part, or is the other one the OEM design? Which one is the original, and which is the aftermarket version? Which one is the one that would have come with my 2000 Dodge Neon SE?

I'm guessing (but hopefully someone will verify) that the second picture is the right one, because I didn't think that the trunk release was motorized... so perhaps that first picture is for a universal?

when you lock the car, the factory alarm does work. Roll your windows down, shut the door, lock the car, and then reach in and physically unlock the latch and open the door. Because you didn't use the key or the remote, the alarm will go off.

Or, lock the car with the window down again, then reach inside and pull the hood latch. There's a spring-loaded switch under the passenger side of the hood. If the car is locked and this switch is tripped, the alarm will also go off.

It's not the kind of alarm that goes off when you pull the handle, or bump the car, or just get too close.

factory alarm is a constant honking at a nice, steady pace.

That is the RKE receive (Remote Keyless Entry).

The first image you posted is the style of fob that came with the car.
http://imagehost.vendio.com/a/27892917/ ... dge3_C.jpg

Unless someone like BRR or Danteneon knows a trick to do it otherwise, you'll have to take it to the dealer to have the first one programmed.

the truck pop is not really "motorized"... it's just an electric release

..and, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it all the cars that have the 'remote' trunk relaese..also have the trunk pop button inside the glove box?

They didn't add the trunk release button in the glovebox until after the first couple years of the second gen. Can't recall the exact year right now...I'm blanking.

He's right and I forgot, there's a minute or two delay, i think it's so people don't keep setting off alarms accidentally. After the delay, it arms the sensors.

So how hard is it to add that trunk release button?

I don't know about '00 and '01 models but my '02 SXT had the glovebox button. And I've had the $%^* scared out of me by the car sounding the alarm when I've opened the trunk after locking the vehicle. It doesn't always do this but I've stopped locking the car before I unload it at night when I come home from work.

I thought that some vehicles came with the alarm installed but disabled. I read this somewhere iirc. Also proving this, my 05 sxt does not alarm when you do the above lock with fob, unlock through windows test but my 04 SRT does.

I have a 2000 LX with remotes and alarm, but no glove box trunk button. My sister has a 2000 ES with remotes, no alarm that we can figure out how to set off, and a trunk button in the glove box. Also on mine, it sets the alarm 10 or 15 seconds after you hit the lock button. The dash light blinks rapidly for a little, then slows down, signaling that the alarm is set.

One time I left my lights on and totally drained my battery, so I unlocked it with the key, popped the hood, and when we hooked up the jumper cables the alarm went crazy. The battery was so dead that it never knew i unlocked it. You don't think that looked a little suspicious...

So then what's the final answer on this... can I take a glove box button from a later 2GN and install it in my 2000 SE? Will there be a wire connection for it?

You just need to change the latch assy, if yours is the standard type, and run a momentary switch/wire to it. I also used a relay for mine, but that may have been overkill.
Got latch from here (2gn)for $18.
If you can get one from a JY or ebay it is the way to go; they are pricey from the dealer.

You may have to locate the wire in the trunk that powers the latch. Splice into it and run a wire back into the cabin to a momentary switch to manually pop the trunk.

try and enter the remote learning mode:

turn the key to run
press and hold unlock for 4-10 seconds
then press the panic button
release both buttons
press a button on ALL remotes.
turn key off
