loose gas pedal
loose gas pedal
my gas pedal has way too much play, and a buddy of mine said the spring might need to be a bit, um, springier. lol. now keep in mind, i dont mean the spring that allows it to sway (without throttle), i mean the actual throttle spring. its driving me nuts cuz when i drop the throttle to shift it makes a clanky loose sound. what should i do to fix it? add washers to tighten up the give? ive thought of a few ideas but nothing great, obviously. anyone else have this prob and fix it? thanks

normally the tb has 2 grooves that you can have th cable on ( i think that's for atx or cruise control or whatever) anyways, see if you move it to the other one if that helps. i could be completely wrong, but if i remember right, on the first gens the ATXs had a stiffer tb spring. maybe someone can chip in on htat, coz that would be a way cleaner fix than adding washers or whatnot
is it possible that the spring is broken or not tight enough. i dont wanna mess with that stuff under the dash cuz its too hard to see and lots of small parts, so im not planning on taking it apart. not a bad idea about the TB though, ill check it out. its damn near impossible to see whats going on around there though, cuz the throttle cable is hidden under that plastic housing.

I don't know how you're going to adjust it there really isn't anything to adjust for pedal feel of the TB. Only way you're probably going to be able to adjust it is bend the pedal where the cable attaches to the pedal. First though I'd pop your airbox cover off since I'm assuming you have the stock intake then use a mirror get get your head down there then have someone push on the gas pedal to make sure the TB is opening all the way. If it is and you adjust the pedal you really aren't going to get anywhere and then if you bend the pedal to much and mash the pedal to the floor you could put strain on the cable and possibly snap the cable.

no airbox here thats been gone for months, good idea though. i could always take of the CAI and try that, but it still dont solve the prob. i have another prob that im gonna post in its own thread, and it relates to the pedal. thanks d

I really don't think it is a problem. Every car is different, from where the clutch engauges to how fast the windows go up and down... comparing one neon to another sometimes doesn't mean anything. I've driven a couple R/Ts and my R/T has its own feel that I'm used to. To me it kinda sounds like you're looking for problems when everything is normal.
I would take your CAI tube off and have a look down through the TB while having someone press on the gas. If it doesn't open all the way then yes you have a problem but if it does then I really wouldn't worry with it since that's just the feel of your car.

Ill check that out next time i get some free time and good weather. thanks
ps. is it possible to flood the engine in EFI cars by opening the throttle when the car is off? or is that only in older carb'd cars?

Can't be done since the fuel is controlled by the computer so it won't release any fuel when the engine isn't running.

Well my pedal was kinda loose too, that didnt let me hell-toe properly so i took it out, added epoxy where the pedal thingy connects to the axis where it rests and that reduced the play from side to side a lot.
I think its something we all should do

could you explain that further please. you mean at the point where the springs little washer meets the end of the throttle cable? i pulled my pedal up and the cable has about an inch of play. when im shifting fast, the pedal is so loose that it jumps around between gears when i drop the throttle. it sounds terrible and feels very unstable. pedal feel is VERY important to driving quality IMO.

Well take the pedal assembly out, you will notice that in the little box the pedal tuns in an Axis, where theres a lot of play, you can move the pedal side by side in the axis because the fit isnt very precise.orangeblastsxt wrote:could you explain that further please. you mean at the point where the springs little washer meets the end of the throttle cable? i pulled my pedal up and the cable has about an inch of play. when im shifting fast, the pedal is so loose that it jumps around between gears when i drop the throttle. it sounds terrible and feels very unstable. pedal feel is VERY important to driving quality IMO.
So you make an strong mixure of epoxy and add it in the part where the metal thing meets the axis, so it wont have lateral play.
Just take the pedal assembly out and you will understand what i mean.
And i totally agree pedal feel is extremely important, i have modded my gas pedal with one cheap one inside with a custom "spacer" so i can heet-toe properly.

yeah its kinda tough to heel toe with the pedal having that funky spring that allows it to flex forward and back. my Sparco pedals reduced the amount they can move a bit, but the rest of the setup feels like total crap, and out of nowhere, not for any specific reason. ill look into the epoxy, but im not familiar with it, ive never used any before. thank u

its not difficult to use at all, its just a glue that gets extremely hard.orangeblastsxt wrote:yeah its kinda tough to heel toe with the pedal having that funky spring that allows it to flex forward and back. my Sparco pedals reduced the amount they can move a bit, but the rest of the setup feels like total crap, and out of nowhere, not for any specific reason. ill look into the epoxy, but im not familiar with it, ive never used any before. thank u

any idea why my pedal feels REALLY tight when i push down on it hard. compared to my gf's neon, its really stiff. hers will hit the floor no prob, and mine feels like a break. its been happening a lot more since its been really cold out, could that have something to do with it?

Just get a 60mm TB and NEVER worry about it again The 60mm feels great. My wife just got a 98 DOHC and i HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE her pedal with a passion! You have to push it 2/3 the way down in all its mushiness to get it to barely start to go. Then it gets really tough to push to get WOT.
The 60mm feels tight from the start. Not hurt-your-leg kinda tight, but stiff enough that the feel of the pedal alone is worth the price of the 60mm. Just check for a used one, keep your eyes out and youll find one soon enough.

but isnt stiffness a bad thing? i was thinkin of the 60mm. But me and my gf have the EXACT same car, except hers has 1000 miles and mine has 9000. maybe hers will get tight as well? the other problem is that the actual throttle cable has TOO MUCH slack, about 3/4". so when i drop off WOT, it bobbles and feels SOOO crappy. should i just take it to DCX?

no, get away from dealerships, the pedal is a very simple devide fix it yourself, you can change the spring if you want.orangeblastsxt wrote:but isnt stiffness a bad thing? i was thinkin of the 60mm. id fix it if i knew what the heck was actually wrong with it. how do i take slack outta the line? if i DID wanna change the spring out, how would i do it?
