Dash and pillars are almost 100% match.
Materials:
- 1 can of BullDog Adhesive Promoter (About 8.99 at Oreilys)
- 1-2 cans of SEM 17233 Chrysler Spray Paint ($9.99 YMMV)
- Couple of scuff pads, preferably soft. I didn't use sandpaper.
- Night at the Roxbury Soundtrack.
1. Remove Pillars - If you don't know already, they pretty much just yank off. I took my time removing them and they seem to be okay.
2. Start scuffing - Get the little scuff pads and go to town scuffing them. Scrub them pretty tough, the point is to make a rough surface so the paint has something to stick to. We're putting a paint promoter to help stick, but scuffing deffinetely helps.
3. Wash - Run the pillars under some water and use soap to clean them off. I didn't take too much time on this. Lather them up then rinse. Dry with a towel afterwards.
4. Bulldog time - After the surface has been cleaned thoroughly and there IS ABSOLUTELY NO WATER on the surface, you can spray the Bulldog adhesive promoter. This stuff is extremely stick and will help the paint really stick to the plastic. I put around 5 coats of this stuff and I still have a LOT left over. It's okay to be generous. I actually recommend putting a lot on.
5. Paint - After the bulldog has dried, it's time to paint. The surface will be sticky so don't let it confuse you into thinking it hasn't dried. I like putting a lot of coats and I reccomend you do the same. It will be a bit of a stretch if you're using one can! Sometimes during installation you might scratch the pillar or rub up against something and depending on how much paint you have on there will nasty scratches down to the base beige pillar.
6. Dry - Let them dry as long as you can and re-install!
Headliner looks like shit, but it's not as bad in person at all. It just looks totally black up there.
There are a few headliner how to's around here that you can look at as far as pulling them down. I went to Wal-Mart and bought about $8 worth of $1 cheap flat black paint. It doesn't match the pillars very well, but at night and during the day it's MUCH nicer cruising with black than beige. At night it's pitch black in there....very nice
What happens if you don't scuff or use bulldog and just spray on the pillars!
Yeah, I tried the "paint the visors because it is easier than trying to re-reupholster them" trick...your description is perfect, stale bread
