Pipe off rear of cat, all one piece or?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Pipe off rear of cat, all one piece or?

Post by jT » Wed Feb 24, 2010 7:32 am

Thanks to this lovely snow and battling the road conditions getting home this morning I've cracked the pipe that comes out the rear of the cat (cracked it right as it comes off the cat, not a foot down the pipe).. can that be fixed/replaced or is it a whole new cat?

edit --
a picture is worth a thousand words so to be clear what i mean here's a pic

If you know anyone who can weld, Im sure they could fix it. If not I have an srt cat that I think is the same, I'll let it go for the price of scrap.

That should be able to be welded.

I believe that is actually your midpipe, if i'm looking at it correctly. The left side is the front of the car? Unless it came like that from the factory, I have not seen that style flex joint there. Where the cat meets the manifold, yes. Mine had the braided steel cover over the flex joint.

Got a temporary fix done, but I need a new - what turned out to be - flex joint..

anyone know what the stock size of the pipe is? MPX has flex joints in 2.25/2.5/3 inch sizes, and advance auto parts has all kinds of sizes but nothing as a stock replacement..

Your '00 is 2"

For $28 that is an incredible price, if the flex joint is included. They generally cost that much plus for the joint. I'd bet it isn't 400 stainless like the oem either.

JT, you can do away with the flex pipe if you want. The one at the cat inlet seems to do fine with out the midpipe one. I still have the one in the pic above, but it is 2.25" I never put it in, when I did the Tru Benz system, and have had no issues.

Probably could have went to a local pick and pull yard an got one even cleaner than that. About 3 weeks ago I nabbed an OEM 2.25" mid section for $5.
