Well, got a call from Brooks today. The seat machining, unshrouding, and resurfacing is done! the bad news is that apparently the BC retainers aren't quite big enough for the crane springs. I had to quickly order some crane retainers....freakin expensive.

Heading over there tomorrow to grab the BCs to send back. I'll take a few pics of the head while I'm there.

Head looks great. I'll grab a better pics later. The mating surface is so freaking shiny now. I stopped by and snapped a picture this morning when I grabbed the BC retainers to send back.

The badnews is summit said it'll take till April 11 to get the crane retainers....screw that noise. I cancelled my order.

Then I found some for sale by 01rtgurl.....sweet! Should be here sat or sunday.

Looking to have it buttoned up soon!

Ugh....USPS can suck a dick.

Overnight express by noon. Guaranteed delivery today and guess what? No dice. Bastards.

Now they're saying Monday by noon. How can you Guarantee something if you're not going to follow through on it. Of course they aren't going to do crap about it either.

EDIT: It magically appeared in my mail box sometime after 5pm...just saw it today when I checked by chance.

So, I dropped the Crane retainers off at my machine shop. I'm going to talk to him tomorrow morning, but I think I can pick the head up tomorrow afternoon.

I bit the bullet and purchased a SECRET cam for an awesome price...No telling Jerry! Also ordered a gates racing timing belt. Didn't want to chance it. Put a deposit down for the Quaife LSD as well.

This thing is going to scream.

He's throwing in the springs, retainers, keepers and valves. He wanted to verify everything functioned right before he got it back to me.

Very cool guy though. He did a runout test on the Indy valves just for fun, and said that they were some of the best valves he had ever seen. Perfectly straight.

Luis - I'm thinking Sunday. The cam and lash caps should be here Friday. Probably gunna watch Blue October for free at Autitorium Shores Fri night.

I removed my stock 02 sensors, and started trimming some wiring....cut the coil pack plug by mistake. oops. Now I have to solder that back on.

In other news, the head is done!

If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Did some work today. Sorry Luis, head is back on. Jen's schedule changed, so I had some last-minute time this morning to do some work.

What I did today:
  • Stopped by Autozone to pickup intake gasekt. It was trashed due to exhaust gases coming out the bent intake valve. Be here Tues.
    Head back on.
Search for ARP head stud nut for 1hr, found it on the K-member
Loop heater core lines at the block....this worked really well by utilizing some of the stock lines.
    Installed 005 Crane cam!
Install cam gear and other stuff on the head.
Modify timing cover to be able to be removed after timing is done.
    Do the timing belt stuff.
    PS engine mount
    Hook up exhaust manifold
I'm pretty much left with the torque struts and intake side of things. Oh, valvetrain too. Waiting on the lash caps to get here and I'll be all set. I'm so stoked about this new cam.

So I'm def stepping up the turbo plans and doing some crazy stuff now. The 005 has a ton of overlap. It really needs a low backpressure turbo to help combat reversion. Originally I was going to do e85 + 11:1CR + Comp 400 + S256, but now I'm looking at e85 + 11:1 + Crane 005 + s366(or similar).

The Comp 400 dwarfs the stock cam. The 005 simply destorys the 400. I was trying to take some camera phone pics with my oily hands to show how the 400 has almost no overlap, and the 005 has tons.

She Lives!

Finished wrapping every thing up. Fired her up, and GTFO'd from the self-storage I had been working on it in. She needs a retune badly. I tried messing with the idle for a few minutes. This cam is so big that the idle vacuum is practically at atmosphere. Def gunna take some time to get her dialed in again.

She made it home okay though. No leaks! The lope sounds like a freaking 350 Chevy. I have to resolder my intake motor and fix my coil harness after work. Then I'll feel confident driving it around.

Eric - Its gunna be naughty indeed. The 005 falls somewhere between the 18s and 22s, should be similar to your setup when its all done :-D

Tam - For sure man....got a ton of retuning to do now.

We shut down the shop early today, so I didn't get any post-work soldering/wiring removal done on the engine bay, another day.

So I decided to start tuning for a new idle. After about 10 minutes, I realized it was overheated....WTF. Got out and checked the fan, of course it wasn't running.

Here's the kicker...my old oil cap was logged in the fan shroud and caused the plastic blade to rip off the motor. I had switched from that one to the MPx cap because after a few heat cycles it was incredibly hard to get off. I must have left it in the engine bay, but that was like 5 months ago!

Well, I pulled off the AC cooler since I never took it off before, and then yanked out the fan shoud...see what I can do to it tomorrow.

Here's a few pics of the engine bay.

Removed the bellows tube and intake. Mounted the TB onto the 60mm welded inlet to the manifold and put the filter directly on the TB.

I think I was able to fix the radiator fan. Going to install it now and see what happens.

Do yourself a favor and get the regulator off a hard fitting attachment. I had an issue myself with an anodized aluminum fitting cracking, and when I got pulled over, there was fuel all the way back on the exhaust manifold. It may have ignited but burned out quickly enough for all I know.

What I did as a solution was put the regulator on a bracket and ran a braided line in between instead of a hard fitting.

Geesh, that's not cool. Honestly, its been on the todo list since I installed the system. I was considering going to a single straight fitting to eliminate the elbow fitting. Were you using a single straight when it cracked? I keep a fire extinguisher in her now ever since I installed the system.

So.... The fan fix worked great! It was a lot easier to maneuver in with the AC condensor gone. I did manage to snap one of the radiator bracket bolts, so I had to remount it, no biggy.

Tuning is going awesome. I was having some IAC problems, but that was due to the connector pulling off. Still haven't touched the idle much, but its at 1300rpm now, which isn't too bad.

Tuning has been fun though! Compared to the Comp 400, I definitely lost a little torque below 4000rpm. That was too be expected though. Above that though, its an animal! Freaking insane. I'm guessing 185+ Whp at a minimum now. 8000rpm+ it just freaking screams. I pretty sure my tach stops working at 8k. Sounds like an F1 car. What was limiting me above 7500rpm before was definitely valve float. Even with the mag springs, the comp 400 must have been too much at that speed. Looking at the VE table, the torque just isn't falling off even at 8000.

I'm done tuning until I can mod my valve cover though. I kept smelling burning oil yesterday. Turns out I was puking oil out the breather onto the exhaust manifold.....eek. I need to weld up a baffle for it and the PCV inside the VC since my old baffle is no more. (would have had to remove it due to the 005 anyway.)

Oh, and what a freaking difference those titanium retainers make for free reving. Rev matching is so easy now.
