Complete turbo build off of ebay?

Post by 03_neoviper » Tue Jul 19, 2011 6:14 pm

I am wanting to do an entire Sohc turbo build off of ebay. Can anyone make suggestions/provide links to decent parts and also name things to stay away from?

Go with ASP.... do it right the first time and you'll only have to do it once.

I speak from experience.

i know im going to get flamed for this, but i have a many friends running ebay turbo kits with no issues. One of my buddies has one on his supra, and another buddy of mine has one on his miata.

The ideal ebay company ( which still isnt very good but will work) Is xs power. Im not sure if they make a turbo kit for neons or not, but if they do thats who i would go through.

http://junkyardturbos.com/

First go to the book store buy a copy of Corky Bell's Maximum Boost

Second go to the local upull you are shopping for anything DSM, mid 90s SAAB ,or, Volvo

1g (89-93) DSM T28 very small makes best power 2000-5500 PERFECT MATCH TO 2gn neon

2g (94-99) DSM T25 even smaller will probably run out of breath

SAAB/Volvo T3 fairly large for a junkyard build most popular because there are more of these

Medium duty diesel trucks: HX35 and larger if you have to ask the answer is no

Regardless take everything including the maifold and as much of the downpipe as you can. Make sure to get all oil and water lines as well as the waste gate actuator.

Find the 1g DSM you should have started with and grab the surge valve

Check Ebay every day for SOHC log intakes (maybe ASP will sell seperately)

Local muffler shop should be able to do intake/high pressure/exhaust pluming

Add fittings to heater lines for coolant (hope you can weld)

Add fitting to oil pan for drain(hope you can weld very well). Oil pressure sensor area can supply oil DONT use a T

Congrats you have a turbo. Now to make it run well you should look into NiteHawks SRT pcm swap or megasquirt if those are too rich for you the 1gn world used BEGI fuel pressure regulators for years and it will get the job done no more than 75psi on stock fittings please.

Now for the bad part you've spent some serious money on this and a lot of time. Chances are you would be much happier to save up and buy the ASP kit as I havent even touched on some things. I witnessed our very own Hudson-Neon install an ASP kit in about a day outside in pouring rain and the car ran well. You sound a little new to the tuning thing save yourself the headache and buy a kit.

You have to be very very careful with ebay turbos.

Hot Rod or Car Craft has been doing some turbo builds using an ebay turbo and it has lasted pretty well so far.

However, if it were my money I wouldn't mess with the cheap stuff because it will cost you more in the end almost everytime.

sorry i edited my post you answered the question earlier. Mk4 is "mark 4" turbo versions run the "2jz-gte" moter.
Ebay brands do not put in the type of research or testing that name brands do, thats why thier turbos are so "hit and miss"

the biggest issue with ebay turbos is the bearings. Your best bet for a budget build is a 14b off of a 1g dsm. they spool quick and you can run a decent amount of boost out of them. (anything over 21lbs is kinda usless because they are just blowing extreamly hot air). If you are in the market for a decent used 14b let me know. we have a couple laying around at the shop, or i could hop on dsmtuners and track on down.
Never let anyone tell you that you can't. The only reason why people say that, is because someone told them they can't and they listened.

i know a SRT owner that ran 400+ on an ebay turbo kit and it ran for years... i also know another guy who blew the turbo in 4 months only making 340's ... so i guess its just luck

I feel like, with the eBay turbos, that's just it: luck. I'd almost rather know that my turbo was junk rather than wondering if it was.

Too bad Mattdog isn't doing the adapter plates for the SRT-4 turbo anymore. I'm running 18+psi on my 2.4L with a 20k-mile stock SRT turbo and life is good at the moment. After seeing how well that little turbo does on the 2.4L, I'd imagine it works excellent on a 2.0L. Never tried it myself.

It works about the same. You lose a little spool, but you gain a little more on the top end and it doesn't spike and fall as hard as it does on a 2.4l. But I still feel like it's entirely too small.

This has been discussed so much, I completely agree with you however others put their engine on the line to save a few hundred dollars... Personally I don't like the odds..

Some of the Turbo Dodge guys have over 20 years on a Garrett. Can't argue with that.

Yup. And I sell them at MAP too. You can't get a cheaper price unless that's the last one the dealer ever wants to sell.

Integrated blow-off valve, wastegate, and boost control? Damn, these things are crazy. I wonder why more OEMs don't use something like this. Seems like a super-reliable all-in-one piece.

MAP as in the retailer term for Miminum Advertised Price, which is the lowest price a distributor allows a retailer to sell their product for. If it's violated, the distributor can easily pull their distributorship, and in some rare circumstances, be subject to a law suit. It doesn't leave much profit for me, but I do what I can to keep things cheap for you guys.
