Compression Test Results

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Compression Test Results

Post by UriahRR » Wed Nov 21, 2012 9:20 pm

Did a quick compression test today, pretty happy with the results, even though Cyl 4 looks a bit low. Tell me what you think, I'm sure you guys know more about what these numbers could indicate than I do. Thanks.

Dry Test - Cyl 1-2-3-4

180-170-180-150

Wet Test - Cyl 1-2-3-4

210-220-200-200

Thanks guys.

Your dry test numbers are better than my wet test results.

What to do? Run it until it gets worse, and in the mean time put $100 a month away until it needs fixed. You will have a nice chunk to either use for a down payment, or a really nice build.

Yup, rings are getting tired. Head looks great. Like OD said, run it while you save up for the rebuild. Probably gonna want to just bore it 20 over and a modern rebuild kit.

Any way you go, there's gonna be stuff to worry about. Unless you can afford a new car with a warranty, I would recommend to stick with the junk you know what trouble it has instead of some junk you don't know about.

I'm thinkin' that's what happened on Nov. 6, too.

But let's just leave it at that. ;)

True. That's what's kept me with the Neon this long. Everyone makes fun of it, but it runs, starts, and chugs along better than their cars, especially since I'm the second owner and I'm close with the first owner. I've just ruined this car time and time again and it's time for a change, getting bored and it's starting to show its age. Compression test about yielded what I was expecting, I think those are good numbers? With the rusty quarter panel, lack of LCA bushings, lack of interior, and shaky ride over 70, the engine is really the best part of this car.

And yea, in complete agreement of November, but we'll just leave those shiny turds at that.

Nobody polished those turds...

At any rate those #s are fine, it's gonna be a while before you need to mess with replacing rings.
