I need opinions

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

I need opinions

Post by Darkwing » Mon Jan 28, 2013 12:01 am

So Ive searched and searched but can not find no information.

My though is has any one run an 2.0 DOHC (1st gen)BLOCK with a mag head running a crane 12? my first thought is valve clearance.

will my combo work or should i go the JE Pistons 10.5:1 route?

oh and im going to be putting this into my non NGC 2000 Neon highline

It has been done plenty. You can either file a little off the pistons, or massage the head. If you are anal about the balance of the rotating assy, you will grind a wee bit off the head.

The pistons only really contact the head if you are buzzing it over 6500 to 7500+ rpm. (More towards 7500+)

Our 1gn ATX has a DOHC bottom end, neither pistons or head (SOHC) modified, and there hasn't been any contact. ATX PCM rev limits at 6000 rpm tho. ;)

There are also valve reliefs, so you should have no issues with a 12. You could probably run a 400 without worry.

The piston to head is more likely than valve to head. Unless you mill the head a good amount.

My 01 ATX doesn't have a rev limit I've hit yet. It will shift at 6700 rpm all day long! The ngc's are different but my 3 spd wil just keep revving hehe.

Hmmm, might want to be really careful not to down shift near those RPM's to get a little more umph.

My cousin managed to explode the TC in a brand new '87 Turbo Sundance. Thus why I figured they rev limited them to ~6000 rpm.

It's really interesting when everything comes to an abrupt stop, and a serene silence sets in.

Then he hits the starter, and it just buzzes....

The dealer was a little less than pleased.

Yea that would suck! When I first started at another dealer there was a SRT10 ram on the lift and the 6spd on the bench in multiple pieces not taken apart by the tech hehehe. Customer stated he went to downshift into 5th and must have reached 2nd at 80mph. Ooooops The clutch, flywheel, all exploded, shattered the 6spd, damaged the body, luckily the aluminum block was unhurt.

Clearly it was not as stout as a neon clutch. I basically did the same to my neon, before I found out there were such things as Booger bushings, and the shifter wasn't supposed to have a mile of slop.

Bounced the tach off of the zero peg. I figured it, and I were both done.

The facing blew off the clutch about 40,000 miles later. Don't know that it was related tho.

i've done both without issue, i've bounced the limiter a few times and still no contact. (thats with filed pistons)

darkwing as for the clutch blowing apart vid you speak of, thats a member on here and it was a bum clutch/trans already he just wanted to put it out of its missery. a clutch in good working order wouldnt do that during a burnout.
