loud valve tick-lash adjuster...

Post by ragek23 » Thu Nov 15, 2012 7:04 pm

It sounds like I have another lash adjuster going on the intake side. It makes sense too since my MPG is gone to S#!t since the noise started. Are there are bad things that can happen if I don't replace this right away? I mean I will, parts are ordered and the car is garged till they come in. I am just wondering what are the potential risks of leaving this.

usually its just noisy, i've only seen one completely fail before and it had 300k on it. I'm sure yours will be fine till you get the part in.

Well if the intake isn't opening as much, but the PCM is still injecting fuel as if it was, the random mixtures going out the exhaust might be skewing the o2 sensor. Plus the compression would be slightly compromised.

Depending on how much the lash adjuster is collapsing, will affect how much slack there is, and how high up the lobe the rocker is before it is smacked by the cam lobe.

If it is more noise than collapse, it would be fine. But if t is totally failed, it will do the cam and rocker no favors, tho the rocker is junk regardless. The cam would probably not be damaged, but I wouldn't say so for a fact. I imagine it would win the battle tho.

Yeah its garaged for now till the part comes in. The ticking got really loud so I just said I am not going to risk it.
I got 26mpg on my last fill up and that was with some highway in there. I know I am overdue for an alignment too but I normally get 28-33mpg on average.

Problem solved well sorta. I think one of the new exhaust adjusters is defective but all the old ones are changed out. Quite a few were shot:

3 intake adjusters and 2 exhaust adjusters were bad. It was totally time for a full replacement.

Ugh....I hated those lash adjuster caps. That orange plastic would always crack, letting them fall off. It was even more fun when I had to use the additional spacers for the 005.

:withstupid:

Hopefully those swivel feet aren't lurking somewhere evil. The plastic retainers may not be so bad...

Yeah, that's where mine ended up. It would be good peace of mind to know they aren't clogging one of the head's drain ports.

This really makes me wonder whats wrong with my neon then, I average 24mpg with a fair amount of highway and city driving I average 190 miles on a tank of gas, 87 with no ethanol.

Dang, <200 miles on a tank. I switched to 89 a little while ago and was averaging 31+ city/hwy. I'm getting about 250-275 on a tank, still on 89. Not sure why I dropped so much unexpectedly, because I was getting 300+ miles on a tank easy.

I could be a lot of things. I just know it was this causing the bad gas mileage because you could hear the loud ticking in the head. I am sure if I pulled the plugs there would be further evidence of me running rich. I would go through the normal deamons: bad plugs, wires, alignment, tire inflation and note your driving style. If you have lots of hills i could easily see this happening.

loud tick

DarkWing, howellautomotive.com sells the rocker arm sets for around $299.00 a set. Got mine there and it made a big difference. If you get them be sure to soak them in clean engine oil and pump them up by hand before installing or they will be very loud on start up and risk damage to them.
