IT is indeed hot, looks like its letting up early next week. I think we had over 20 days in a row over 90...
Over 90?

I wish it was 90... it's 90 at 11pm here :(

^which is why texas + summer = misery.

90-95 isn't so bad. It's when it's 102-105 with an index of 115 for 5 days in a row that makes me want to move to Alaska immediately. I just generally don't like summer. Summer is only fun when you're a kid. As an adult considerably past school going years......summer sucks.

I guess technically you are correct. Summer is awesome in certain places on the globe. Places where it's 65 degrees Fahrenheit at the hottest time of the day.

Missouri is not one of them.

Thanks! Not much to update. My battery died yesterday, so I had to plunk $90 down on a new one. Besides that, I've just been driving it.

Here is the work that I just finished on the car:

-Timing belt
-Water pump
-Tensioner
-AC/PS belt
-Alternator belt
-Coolant drain/fill
-Compression test
-Replaced broken e-brake parts

I used a Gates blue racing belt, and that thing is sweet. No ordinary belt, it's about the highest quality belt I've ever had in my hands. Highly recommend, even though it's a little pricey. This car also had the old style hydraulic timing belt tensioner. I wasn't really expecting that, because I thought they stopped using those in 2000. But I guess not.

Compression was perfect, 165-170 across the board. Here's some pictures. I've never had an R/T before, so it was kind of cool to see R/T written on the block.

Thanks!
I see you changed the title of the thread too. Nice!

Thinking about doing the rear emblems too in red. Guy does a great job making it look OEM.

Not sure what I want on the back though. "DODGE" "NEON" "2.0 Magnum" "R/T" Which ones to not have and which ones to have? Thinking of just Neon and 2.0 magnum on the right side.

You know, I really like those decals, and they do look sharp in red. I think I would have done a medium charcoal gray if it was me though. Mostly because I was going for the gray & blue accent theme....thus the gray/blue valve cover. I also was going to paint the calipers blue. Little bling bling.

The gray would of looked cool, didn't think of that. I like how the red pops though. Going to get all the other decals made. Decided to go with them all minus the R/T. Basically factory looking except in red.

Makes me wonder why DCX didn't offer badges similar to your new decals. Very sharp!

I agree.
Well my father and I both own the car. We switch every week. Well a couple days ago I got a call from him and he was checking the oil and he said it was very low. I had checked it a month or so ago and it was full. Not believing him, I drove over to his house to find out it was very low. Way below the minimum. Only a dab or so on the end of the stick. So I bought a thing of 5w-30 Valvoline Synpower and got it up to max again. I did notice there was quite a bit of crud on near the cam position sensor and I believe the knock sensor. Then I took a peak underneath and it was wet down there. He didn't have a jack so I couldn't really inspect it much. No oil spots on his driveway. I told him to keep an eye on the level after he gets done driving it to work... So far it has been fine..

I got the car today and I checked it, it went down a little bit but not much. I took some pictures after I washed it. Not really sure where it is seeping from.

Any ideas? Seems to be higher than the oil pan gasket unfortunatley. Rear main seal, cam seals? Other potential spots to check?
Edit, could still be oil pan gasket.

Oil pressure switch. PITA to change out, but I bet that's it. It's on the back of the block, up high, on the drivers side. That thing leaked on one of our other neons back in the day, and it would lose a decent amount of oil because of it.

Damn if YOU say its a PITA to install its probably not even worth attempting. Thanks though for the insight!
The oil pressure transducer on the neon is locate on the rear of the block on the same end as the transmission, neatly tucked behind the transmission bracket. Get at it from underneath with the car on ramps or a lift. 1. Unplug the green electrical plug, red safety clip undone first. 2. Use a switch removal socket 1" - 1 1/16 and a stubby ratchet. 3. Replace as required remembering to apply yellow (gas & oil proof) teflon tape.
Test run the engine and observe, mine failed internally and still leaked after sealing the threads.
Hmm this might help/ ^

Drove it a couple days and its at the same mark. Thinking about going back to regular oil. I would have to go semi synthetic next oil change and then regular the next correct?

Dude, those decals look great. I really like them.

First, if you go back to regular oil, you don't have to do anything special. You can switch back and forth every oil change from full synthetic to regular if you want to. Bottom line, if you change the oil every 3k miles anyway (due to leaks or usage) then regular oil works great and simply saves you money. I'd put Pennzoil yellow bottle in it, and just use that for a while.

Second, ACKK!! Rust? I never detailed that car by hand, I hadn't even noticed a rust bubble. That sucks. It doesn't look too bad though, maybe clean it up, mask it off and paint it and it'll disappear.

Thanks, the Neon is a tiny bit crooked but I don't care. Thats good to know I can go straight to regular oil. I just bought $30 5qt thing of the synpower. (On sale) Yeah there are a couple bubbles and the paint came off on the big one. Its no big deal. I am just going to mask off the area and I have the rust reformer crap that is black.

Car will be on the market soon. :( If I do not sell it in a month I am going to purchase the other half from my dad. We both own the car and we take turns driving it every week. I will have it a week then he will drop it off and I will have it a week. Well I need it for two weeks since my silver car is having PS issues. He does not like that. Even though that is the point of the black car. He is just being very bitter about it. So he pretty much told me that he would sell his half to me, which I could do. But I would like to test the market first and go into something different/cheaper as a DD.

Does your dad still have that Jeep I saw? Cause if he does (and the Jeep isn't out of commission)....they that's a dick move to not let you use the car for two weeks instead of the normal one week. It's just one week for crying out loud.

Hopefully it works out for you. But if you have to sell.....a bunch of people expressed interest. I'd think it shouldn't be too hard to move.

Yes he does. Yeah it is pretty messed up. I saw him today and wrote him a check for his half of the vehicle. So it is mine. :) Only added $100 every 6 months for insurance. I might test the market for it. We shall see.

Dude, keep it. I'm half tempted to buy it back from you, I miss driving it...but I know that I want a bike instead. I can garage both my cars and a bike....but not a third car. Plus a bike gets 45mpg and is even faster.

Artes' 01 R/T work log

Post by Artes340 » Sun Feb 03, 2013 9:17 pm

As you may know, this black 2001 R/T was previously owned and cared for by MyNeonSaysHi.

Image

It's been rather cold this week and my updates have been limited so let's start a log.

Minor updates include new batteries for the two remotes, Bosch Icon wiper blades, and replacing the power steering pressure switch. The picture is rough. The work area is a little tight, but it's a pretty quick fix and should resolve the CEL.

Image

Next small things to examine:
Horn does not work on the column, but it will chirp when pressing the remote door lock.
Trunk is not releasing with the remote, but does engage and move the wire near the trunk lock.
Key and ignition switch have stuck a couple times.
Rear suspension clunking.

Springtime adjustments include an Energy Suspension master bushing kit 5.18111 (black or red? hmm) and a front strut tower bar.

That's all for now.
