2004 MTX swap to 3 speed automatic

Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

2004 MTX swap to 3 speed automatic

Post by gearbanger4 » Sat Mar 02, 2013 8:44 am

So, i know this doesn't make a whole lot of sense to most, but I am in a position where I need to make the change to an automatic transmission vehicle. Currently I have a 2004 sxt 5 speed. Instead of getting rid of the car, I want to swap to an auto trans.

I am thinking if I went with an earlier 31th? from an earlier neon I could swap the 3 speed hydraulically controlled automatic in without the ECM from really knowing....if you will (just trans, mount, pedals, shifter, linkage etc). I am trying to avoid swapping engine wiring harness, skim, ECM etc....for cost and to simply make the swap easier.

Any thoughts on potential problems I may have going this route would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Only one small glitch. TCC solenoid.

You will need to find a way to engage/disengage it without really giving it thought. Because you will forget about it enough times to fry the lock up clutch. Or it will be a total gutless wonder, because it is not letting the TC do it's thing when some engine RPM is needed.

Damn, Formerly beat me to the punch. I would GLADLY swap drivetrains. Only issue would be getting the PCMs flashed by a dealer...
