Looking for opinions on my gauge plans

Post by Arro » Fri May 03, 2013 2:23 pm

I just picked up one of those clean, color-matched pillar pods from MPx.

I wanted to get your opinions on my plans...

It's a triple gauge pod. I want to run (from top to bottom):

- Autometer UL A/F gauge (3375)
- Autometer UL-II 30-0-30 Boost (4903 or 4904)
- VDO Vision Silverstone Oil PSI (350-9041)

I plan to run an LC-1 and use one of the outputs to the Autometer gauge, with a conversion table for the LED's, so it WILL read true wideband.

Part of that decision was because I was given a free, new Autometer narrow band gauge, and after extensive digging I was led to the page for the LC-1 where that otherwise useless gauge becomes useful. In the end, all I need to buy for a wideband setup would be the LC-1 itself, since I already have a gauge. So for $150 I have the whole setup.

As far as the VDO goes, it's fully backlit with a stanard bulb, and the face is that "painted silver" surface much like OEM SRT gauges (including the SRT boost gauge). If I stick a green bulb condom on it should light up the letters green just like the factory cluster and boost gauge.

Now, for the boost gauge... a couple things. I don't want to remove the factory gauge because it matches the rest of the cluster. I like the look. So I figured a second gauge on the pillar would handle things if I needed to go higher than 20. I looked at dozens of gauges but it's hard to tell what they look like based on the internet. My only issue with the Autometer UL and UL-II is that the faces are brushed aluminum and to me they do not match our factory stuff. Still, at least the UL-II is backlit. I figure also that I may only just need PSI and not vac because the factory gauge shows vac just fine.

Anyways...

What do you guys think?
Drive it like you stole it, and work on it like you married it.

Get matching gauges.

*edit because I just read the entire post

Why run two boost gauges? You'll clutter up your pillar and it seems pointless.

two gauge pillar, with matching oil pressure and wideband gauges

There is no oil pressure gauge that matches the SRT OEM gauges... the VDO Silverstone w/ green bulb cover will be as close as you can get.

I already bought the three pod pillar, sometimes I think I

I should have gone with the two-pod version but it's what I have now.

I like the daytime look of the factory boost gauge (I dislike the night time look) and the standard Autometer Ultra-Lite gauges do not look like the SRT cluster. Different dial printing, no through-dial lighting, different finish on face, etc.

I think you're right about two boost gauges... maybe I will get a matching VDO silverstone for volts or something and get a digital readout for boost and put it elsewhere.

That's why I just went with all AEM gauges. Black face, black trim. My boost and wideband match, but my oil pressure is analog and doesnt fully fit in :(

Definitely skip that crappy narrowband. It'll cause you, and your tuner, nothing but headaches. And oil pressure....sure, that's an ok choice, but you'd really benefit from an Interceptor.

That'd round out your gauge selection nicely, and give you pretty much all the info you'd ever need.

By the way...

Have you seen this?

Matches pretty well methinks.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Bump due to college killing my free time until summer... Dante, the non-SRT pro-comps don't backlight, they reflect illuminate. Even the "factory" gauge doesn't light up like the cluster, althogh at least it has some through-lit numbers and the number font matches.

If you look at the VDO silverstones, the numbers look nearly identical to the gauge cluster's italic font, and the gauge is true backlit, and the silver isn't brushed, it's a painted on silver like the cluster.

In the end, I think I'll go with a VDO oil, VDO volt, and then maybe an AEM wideband or LM-1 wideband w/ Autometer narrowband sport comp mod.

the only way to really be happy;

get all matching AEM equipment for your pillar and make a custom tach/speedo backing to match everything else. I'm pretty sure I've seen it done a few times before. I'm willing to bet LSP has something like that, seeing as everything on her car has been altered lol
