Use 00-02 Clockspring in 05?

Post by fhadso » Sat Sep 07, 2013 2:39 am

Is it possible? Obviously I need to do this for cruise control. I recently discovered that my car is pre-wired for CC, so as far as I understand, I just have to bolt it on and hook it up, but the availability of 03-05 cruise control clocksprings is slim to none. I haven't found a single one.

My question is, would a clock spring out of a 00-02 work? Would a clockspring out of any other chrysler vehicle work for that matter?

FWIW, the part #s are different:

00: 04793585

01-02: 04793585AB

05: 04671946AB

As far as other Chrysler vehicles, I don't know, except that PT Cruisers have yet again different numbers than the Neons.

Are replacement clocksprings hard to find ?? Even new ones ??

So far, yes. I've looked on eBay and everywhere. I've found 0-02 clocksprings, but no 03-05s. I found a switch, and assuming I can use an 00-02 clockspring, all I have to find is the servo and I'm golden.

Now that I have part numbers, I might be able to find one. But if anyone can verify that an older one would work, that would be great. If it's true that I can use a PT clock spring, then that helps too.

Also: if anyone finds one, let me know. I don't have any junk yards that are relatively close, so if you stumble upon one in your browsing (at a yard or online), I would be willing to buy it from you and all that jazz.

IIRC at least the airbag-plug definitely is different - so no direct fit. You could swap it as well as the switch plugs.
On the older steeringwheels you have two cruisecontrol switches, on the later neons you have just one.

Except you have the older steeringwheel installed.

PT-Cruiser one-switch-thing won't work for different resistors.
Legoman tried exactly that on his SRT.

Btw - have you seen this thread?

Actually, I have the 03-05 "T" steering wheel...I ordered the correct switch.

Would anyone happen to have a part number for the servo?

And yes, I have seen that thread. I'm wanting to avoid that at all costs.

I'm sure the '03 - '05 are available new, but the cost is the killer, if the current one is in good shape, it is a tough sell for just adding Speed Control. If the current one has totally failed, then it takes a little sting out of it.

A non Speed Control clock spring can be and has been converted, but you still need the connectors. All have the 5 ribbon cable in them, just not all the conductors are used.

The problem with used ones, is they could last for years, or a day, depending on what the usage of the car, and miles. A strictly highway car would be the best bet, but that is one piece of vehicle history you won't get at a JY, or Ebay, unless a seller has that knowledge, and is honest.

You could just get the resistor values, and make buttons mounted on the console/other and not need the CS at all.

The servo is pretty much the same for all years, and from what I can tell is not exclusive to the neon. What you need to match correctly is the mounting bracket, and the throttle cable for your car, which should be the same for 2002 up. The 2000/2001 have a different end for the AXT vs the MTX. You want the MTX for the newer style.

If you go with a box type IM, and change the TB location, you may need to change the Speed control Throttle cable. They are not as forgiving as the accelerator cable to changes in routing. I have a 1gn Stratus cable on mine.

So for this steeringwheel you definately have to male the 02 clockspring fit. And that is useless imho, because you could spent the same work on your existing clockspring to add the wires for the switch there

Should I trust this site? http://www.mydodgeparts.com/parts/2003/ ... /index.cfm

Call me a noob, but I'm a bit confused about the conversion of the stock CS. The guide says to solder the ground and positive for each switch? What if I'm using the mopar switch?

For the older steeringwheels with two switches - both are using the same two wires and at the end it doesn't matter, which pin you put where as the effect depends on the resistance of the position you switch.

I will have a closer look to the T-wheel I have laying around and the switch it uses.

I got my switch in today, and I noticed that it only has the two wires (Positive and ground I'm assuming). So I would just use those two wires, correct?

Also: On the wiring guide, the two places to solder the wires, should I wire both wires coming from the switch to one post, or one wire to each post? Also, which wire is positive/negative, if it matters.

Pos or neg does not matter. 2 wires for cruise. Just connect. Airbag and horn is more important...

The PCM is only reading the resistance for each switch. It uses that value to determine which button was pressed.

Ah. Ok, now I understand. This actually IS really easy. So assuming once I get it wired up and working, I just have to get the servo and I will have cruise control.

You will need to plumb some vacuum lines to the servo also. IIRC, it needs a check valve in the line. The vacuum reservoir is not 100% needed, unless you have problems with it staying engaged. I haven't had to have one with my set up.

You can probably get the check valve from the donor car you get the servo from. They are usually in the small plastic tubing that goes to the servo. If you can get the plumbing from a neon, so much the better.
