world war neon 1gn log

Post by gtxtreme19 » Sat Nov 02, 2013 4:34 pm

Well I traded the 00 2.4 atx for this 99 coupe dohc. This is how it looked the day I got it

First mod: voodoo doll stickers
Image

Eventually I got bored with the white and got a plan going. "World war neon" inspired by the Willy's jeeps from the 40s. I decided the army drab wasn't green enough and got some paint. Rustoleum hunter green was the choice cause I'm cheap and can do pretty good work with rattle cans. I added the roof rack for utility as well as aesthetics, I keep 2 ratchet straps in the glove box when I find something kick ass at the junk yard or yard sales.
Image

Today I got a little bored with the green alone and conned a friend into cutting some vinyl for me, we ran out after the letters and hood decal. This is what happened
Image
Image
We ran out of white vinyl or else there would be a Willy's star in the center of the doors too... eventually.
I'd like to add steelie 17s or slipstreams to finish the look and some coilovers to finish off the look.

I've got an obx UDP going on tomorrow morning. I missed out on a set of army green boogers that I didn't see on the big org until they were gone. I need to address the shimmy the brakes have developed this week, fix the exhaust leak before winter, and find a fog bumper. Soon I'll get bored with the green and paint it for real OB would look good. I need to find a place to mount my CB antenna too

Thanks fellas, I'm thinking the interior needs something. As we speak I should be making pizza, but instead I'm looking for digital camo fabric, and a good tack adhesive.

LOLZ I had been online with Pizza Hut just before I saw your comment about the pizza. It would almost be worth the $70 to have you come down and remove my battery for me.

I'd do it. I'd even bring two pizzas on account of the smell on the drive there would drive me bonkers. Today was half productive, lately when it rains my alternator belt squeals to beat hell. To solve the problem I bought an used obx UDP and belts for 40$
Image
So much easier to get to in a first gen
Image
This stuff has been a life saver, since I started using it I've not had any broken bolts or rounded off bolt heads... no more pb blaster or wd-40
Image
Finally installed!

While I was under there I decided to see what lowering springs were on the car. No wonder it rides like a lumber wagon, damn high rates suck for a DD
Image

I also decided to see why my car sounds louder than my truck lately. I knew the muffler would be rusting out soon, since a few months ago I had to pull the bottom part of the wrap off of it cause it was rusted and scraping the ground.
Image
This started its life as a dynomax cat-back kit so I assume the whole thing is this bad. Any suggestions for something that isn't wicked loud but still has a decent tone?

Neons don't sound terrible with fart cans on them, so an ebay kit isn't a bad idea.

This is an ebay kit on my 1gn when it still had a cat converter.

sounds like the ninja in my garage. My problem is I drive about 25 miles each way on a straight flat stretch of road to get to work at 55 mph. I don't want anything that will have a nasty drone like this hole does.

Well, that is without the insert in the muffler. You can put the insert in it and it makes it a lot quieter.

That's the problem with Walker/Dyno Max stuff. They are lucky to make it 3 to 5 years.

And anything that isn't near silent will have some kind of drone or rasp, unless you spend more than you really want to.

There is a thread about these on the other .org, but AFAIK, there aren't any sound clips.

I actually think I'm going to follow Jerry's advice, 121$ for 2.5 "stainless" cat back that I could replace the muffler on if I don't like the sound. Worse come to worse I end up replacing with a trubend kit down to the road but for the price its pretty good. Damn do I hate fart cans though

Summit sells the one I linked for ~$92. Of course that would mean a handling charge for you, or a bunch of driving, so it is a wash. well maybe not, piping isn't included, so yeah, as usual, "Jerry is right".

Piping or hangers or any of that. I may actually opt to save 10$ and stick to the 2.25 piping. I need a header anyway so I may just replace the whole system from the head back.

It looks like a knockoff of a exhaust I remember available years ago for neons. It will prolly hold up for a good long time.

I won't be ditching the high rates until I find a decent set of coil overs. As far as painting the car, when I painted it the whole passenger side was scratched, dented, primed, and skimmed with body filler. I do have 4 gallons of real paint laying here, 1 jade green (think seafoam), another green (again think seafoam... paint stores don't know how to match the Color code j5 when you tell them its sublime), brite white, and orange blast. I plan on painting the car with legit paint soon but haven't had a facility in a few years.

Today I have to hunt down a vacuum leak before work its been idling crazy high for 2 days now. I don't want to go out in the snow to the garage though

No updates but I'm sick of looking at the gap between the top of my front bumper and my fenders. Who wants to sell me a 2gn front clip to swap on. I have the cut off wheels ready!

Might be able to cure the gap by shimming up the impact absorber under the fascia. I installed new hardware, raised the crash bar, and still have a freaking gap. Maybe in the spring I'll get a replacement fascia and absorber. Our '96 is perfect, all it took was adjustng the sides.

My fascia is torn, and has numerous coats of paint. After the PITA it was stripping the rear fascia, I decided It wasn't worth the effort to strip the front, and repair it. I think there are layers of latex paint along with god knows what on there. It took me 5 days straight of paint stripper and scraping just to salvage the rear.

Yeah, I spent the day at the junkyard Monday. Got all the goodies for the 2gn core support swap, all I'm lacking are headlights, bumper and fenders that I need to weld up. Once I do all that I'll be changing the color of the car in the spring too... no more zombie utility vehicle for me
