Dodge working on a high-performance Dart, could have a V6 engine
Image

Could produce up to 271 bhp (202 kW)

"We haven't heard much about the Dodge Dart SRT-4 lately, but a new report is indicating the company is developing a high-performance version sans the SRT badging.
According to Allpar's sources, a small team of engineers are trying to fit a V6 engine into the Dart. There's no word on which engines are being considered but the website suggests it could be either a 3.0-liter V6 - with approximately 230 bhp (171 kW) - or a 3.2-liter V6 with 271 bhp (202 kW). Regardless of which one gets the nod, both are sustainably more powerful than the range-topping 2.4-liter TigerShark four-cylinder which cranks out 184 bhp (137 kW).
If everything goes according to plan, the Dodge Dart V6 could be introduced in a year or two."

The Dart is approximately the same width as the "new Cherokee" so I can imagine a V6 version ... I'd buy it

Heh, that picture has been my desktop background for a while now. Good stuff.

A V6 might be interesting, but I was sort of hoping for a 2.4L turbo. I can't wait to find out more about the Tigershark 2.4 and how many similarities there are to the Caliber SRT-4 engine. I don't expect much in common with the PT/SRT engine, but weirder stuff has happened.

On the minus side, the "new 2.4 liter" engine is SOHC, however the turbocharged "2.4 World Engine" used in the CSRT4 was rated at 285 hp versus 230 hp
for the "Neon 2.4 liter" w/o variable valve timing. The Caliber was simply too heavy ... like the new Dart

With more govt standards car are getting heavier. Nothing they can really do about it unfortunately. I drove cokedoctos's 1.4t dart at Carlisle and it didn't feel like a 3000+ lb car.

 I don't agree ... if they can build a 600 hp Viper that weighs 3,300 lbs, there's no necessity for the 160 hp Dart to weigh 3,200 lbs

Agreed, they could make it weigh 2000 lbs, but the price would be way out of the target customer's reach.

I wonder what a Dart would weigh without all the airbags, sound deadening and random safety crap? Bring it down to 2900 you think? But whats the point of doing that to a new car  The new Dart is a fun little daily driver at best. They look sexy as hell too with the right wheel combo and color.

Alfa Romeo Guielietta is "less porky" than the Dart. Mazda 3 is lighter, also. The Dart is marketed as being the longest, widest, and tallest car in the segment.
It's not a better car than the competition, it's just better than the Caliber.

Ford Focus and Chevrolet Cruze are gaining market share, while the Dodge Dart is having disappointing sales results.

Mazda3's will always catch my eye. They're nowhere near as good looking as the first generation was, but I like those cars a lot. I'm glad my smarter, better-looking half decided to buy one a few years ago.

More like this:

Image

2.0L with a 5-speed, just like my Neon. Great car to drive.

So, back to the Dart. I was at Target the other day and I parked next to where a guy was putting his baby daughter into the back seat of his Dart Rallye turbo. It was blue with hyper black wheels, and man did it look great. So I made a comment and asked him how he liked it. He said he liked everything about it. He didn't really hit me as a car guy, but he said he spends a lot of time driving it. He was going on and on about the Uconnect and how well-thought-out it was, which is what many car reviews highlight when reviewing that car.

Our 2005 Dodge Neon SXT wasn't an "enthusiast's car" either. However, when I drove the 2013 Dodge Dart Rallye, I wasn't impressed with it for daily driving.
Our 2009 Dodge Avenger is more comfortable, and gets a 29.5 mpg on the highway with a V6 engine. The current 3.6 Pentastar V6 engines are more powerful
than our old 2.7, with similar mpg.

I still say that if the Dart had a big H on its hood, it would be more popular.

It also has the rebaged import stigma. They seem to be hit and miss. You didn't/don't see droves of Ford Probes and Pontiac Vibes, but they still sold/sell in large enough numbers.

It knda works the other way too. You don't see a lot of Dakota based Mitsubishi Raiders around either.

Chrysler is laying off 325 employees at its Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois due to slow sales of the Dodge Dart.

Even though Chrysler saw overall sales rise 11 percent in February, Dart sales actually declined 33 percent year-over-year. Chrysler says that the layoffs are necessary “to balance vehicle supply with current sales demand.”

In comparison, Ford sold almost 235,000 Focuses in 2013, while Honda sold more than 336,000 Civics. The Dodge Dart only managed to muster 83,388 sales last year.

SEE ALSO: 2013 Dodge Dart GT Review

The biggest factor playing against the Dart right now is the Dodge Avenger, which is being offered with great incentives and allows customers to get a larger car for almost no monetary penalty. The Avenger has now been discontinued, and once it is finally sold out it will be possible to properly gauge how much interest there is in the Dart. In 2013, the Avenger sold 93,842 units.

Interesting stuff. Would LOVE to see a sub $30k, RWD, 300hp, 2700lb~, 2 door coupe come from the SRT brand. There is only 1 new SRT vehicle right now as stated in the article. The new Viper.
