Booger Bushings broken, replacement bushing won't stay on...

One of the trans-side booger bushings on my '05 failed today. Found only one parts store in a 50 mile radius that had these supposed replacement bushings (Dorman 14044) I got that home to find that I had to trim one edge of the larger bushing to get it to fit down into the shift cable. Then, after 50 miles of driving it pops off too because the bushing doesn't seem to 'lock' on to the shift lever coming out of the transmission. So, I'm stuck again and have no idea what I can do to get this fixed. Any ideas on what I can do to get the replacement bushing to stay on?

I've sent an email regarding the Booger bushings to see if they will be replaced, don't know what else I can do in the mean time.

Was thinking I noticed a groove around the end of the post the bushing slides down onto... any kind of spring retainer clip that might go over that?

Yes I know for a fact Jeffb will replace them for free. He only asks that you send a pic of the broken one. Had some of mine dry rot and he replaced them

Try the local hardware store, or a good auto parts store, such as NAPA -
Ask them if they have an 'e-clip' or a hairpin clip that will fit this application.

Looking at Home Depot's website (because I'm trying to figure out what I need before I call someone to borrow their car), it looks like a 1/8" e-clip will fit? Does this sound like a viable solution? At least until the replacement ones get here?

If I were you, I would pick up 2 or 3 different sizes.

I've tried this kind of thing before..... Often, when I go to put one on, it's not the size that I think it is, and keep trying until I find one that 'fits'.

Or maybe a zip tie would work temporarily until you get another booger bushing.

An E clip is what my 1gn came with, but it also has a roller skate bearing pressed into the big end. It works fine, but not sure I would have went that route. I haven't removed it for fear that the hole will be too large for the Booger to fit snugly enough. So I have a random large end booger in my glove box.

FWIW, the bearing stays in place just fine without the clip.
