Pop goes the fuse....

Post by BR4ND0NW4YN3 » Thu Mar 13, 2014 12:08 am

04 SXT ATX.... My 30 amp fuse to run my Rad fans blows about 15 seconds after I turn on the A/C. They also won't kick on during a warm day at stoplights, I've almost over-heated several times. I've checked the wiring and can't find any shorts, possibly the relays? Anyone else go through this? Opinions?

Did you try unplugging the fans and manually engaging the relay to see if the fuse still blows?

Maybe invest in a circuit breaker to put in the fuse spot to keep from replacing fuses constantly.

How would I manually engage them? I haven't tried that.

take the plastic cap off the relay and squeeze the contacts together by hand (it wont shock you)

OK I'll try it in shop today. Is it possible my fan motor is surging to much power and blowing the fuse?

Well I tested without the fans connected and the fuse didn't blow. The passenger fan is either shorting or the motor is faulty. Drivers fan didn't blow the fuse. Now to check the motor and wires to the passenger fan. Thanks for the help guys. :)

At least you have it narrowed down considerably. And can probably drive it without fear of overheating.

I drove my 1gn for a long time with only the passenger side fan, and it never even began to overheat. I converted it to the '95 single fan set up when my nephew scrapped his '95. The single fan handles the 2.4 swap with ease.

It's the passenger fan I tested it today. So I put the driver fan in the passenger spot so it would hit the motor straight on. Where's the cheapest place to buy a new one? AutoZone want $100 for a new one.

Thanks! What years have dual fans? I was thinking a Pick-n-pull might have what I need.

I grabbed one at Pick N Pull, it was $40-60 I think.

Had to get one because all the replacement radiators I could find are for automatic trans so the tabs were different than the manual fan and I needed an automatic style fan.

So I got a fan out of a old Geo and it plugs in and works perfect. Problem is it rotates the wrong way. :( is it possible to cut and wire it backwards to make it work properly?

It depends: Sure you can reverse the motor. But if the blade is not spinning the right direction, it will not really move air. Plus it may actually block natural air movement through the radiator at speed.

If the blade is spinning the wrong direction using the neon's polarity, then swapping the wires will work. Kind of interesting that they both use the same connector tho.

My thoughts exactly. Since it's a DC motor by swapping the wires it will spin the correct direction and move air the right way instead of blocking it. Glad I can finally put this issue to rest :D

I don't recall the year. It was a Geo Prizm though. And the diameter of the fan was smaller. I had to take a piece of sheet metal cut a circle and use a 3" whole saw to "adapt" the fan to fit the stock shroud mounts. Totally worth the $50 savings to me.
