Optima Battery

Post by alabama.tuner0315 » Thu Jun 22, 2006 1:26 pm

Ok i went to optima's website and searched for a battery for the neon and of course no match. So, i did a search for a honda civic si 2.0L and there was a yellow top group size 51r.

The Question is will this be ok in the little neon? That factory battery isn't cutting it.

it will probably be a smaller battery meaning it wont fit in your tray...just find one with enough CCA for your car and as for u getting a new battery....it wont help out much if ur getting it for a system...to do any good your going to need a new alternator *sp?*

I can give you a real easy how to on the battery tray mod and the red-top battery they sell.

Simply put, you cut two slits on the edges of the tray closest to the engine, and hammer it flat. When you install it, it fits perfectly and you can use the stock mounting stuff. Plus, it is all hidden under the bettery itself, so no one is the wiser. :D

I do not know about the yellow top though. :?

No, It shouldn't get moved because I just want to know because i don't want the piss pore stock battery. Besides if anyone else wants a battery and don't know the size they can look at our inputs.

A 51R is about the dame size hight and width. But the Depth (front to back) is about 1/2 the size. Honda batts are SMALL!!! We use a 24R would look for this size or see what is a common size to sub in. not sure right off but man are those Honda batteries small.

The normal sock size for our car is group 35, the D35 Yellowtop fits in teh tray all nice and neat cept for widthe (left-right) its about 1/2" too long. I fid mine int he battery tray and just had 1 end hang over. It was still clamped in the tray tho. Worked like a charm and helped w/ my audio system. Cut the dimming in 1/2, and upgradin the grounds cut it down even more.

Ok thank you. If its only a half inch too big on the side i can build a battery tray. Spray it so it looks normal. Or buy a crome one.

I just did a lot of research on Optima for the company I work for. The yellow-top is not your best choice for a starting battery. It's good for the power-liftgates on the back of our trucks or if you're using a big audio system (like others here pointed out). Otherwise, you'll want a red-top--that is a starting battery (which is just what it sounds like). Also, since Optimas pack more power per square inch, (due to the coil design of the reactive lead), you can use a much smaller than normal Optima red-top. Advanced Auto Parts, believe it or not, has great prices on Optima batteries. I know--I called around.
Fix it 'till it's broken. Then upgrade.

so the group size is 35, but does that directly affect the cranking amps and all that other mumbo jumbo? what i mean is, what other specs are required for it to work best with our cars? or would one just run down to the store and ask for a red top group 35 and be done? thanks

No, they're AGM. Basically, they're water filled, but 90% of the water is absorbed by the "cells" at any given moment. That's why you can shoot a hole in them and they don't leak.
