2001 R/T PCM on stock SOHC? What happens?

Post by The_Traveler » Fri Jun 30, 2006 2:05 pm

I will get the PCM flashed with my VIN by the dealership so the sentry key will work.

The car has a cold air intake and I got a deal on a 2001 R/T PCM. I'm looking to do a magnum swap for now and then turbo later (won't keep the R/t PCM for the turbo car).

What happens if I get it flashed and plug it into my normal SOHC. Assuming I'm running 91 octane.

Will it be a little faster? (THE CAR IS ATX UNTIL NEXT MONTH.)

I don't think the car would be faster, and I think you wouldn't need 91 octane either. This of course is a grasp into the wind because I have nothing to really back it up, other than I think I have read the above before.

As it stands right now, your the second person to ask this....
Im in works right now to get another 2gn'er into the same boat, except he is going to dyno the results between a nonmag and a mag pcm...

I would say you would still need 91 oc. gas becuase the ECU Advances the Timing, thats the only reason it needs the 91 octane fuel.
You wouldnt see the full benift though because your engine isnt breathing like the Mag head, also im not sure if the compression is the same.
You might gain a few ponies from the timing change but Id say until you did the full mag head swap, mag intake manifold, and a header... You will have spent 200-400 for the mag head, 150-250 for a mag intake and 50-100 for a header, and you gain roughly 16-20 whp... Really that doesnt seem very cost effective to me...

Like i said Traveler if you get a good deal on all those parts then go for it, but i wouldn't spend more than 300-400 TOPS to get that mag assembly, its just not worth it dedicate your attention to your brakes and suspension first.

if it was a 02 R/T pcm i would say youd gain a little since the 02 R/T pcm has different timing/maps due to the smaller cam in the 02 R/T vs the 01 R/T.. but i doubt its gonna be anything major.

its kinda like putting a 01 R/T cam in a 02 R/T.. your gonna gain a little because youll have a combination of a slightly larger cam and a better tuned pcm.

01 R/T's had a larger cam then 02 R/T's but they were able to get the lost power from retuning the PCM on the 02
