Need a spot for sub.....

Post by apk2k6 » Tue Jul 04, 2006 1:40 am

I'm thinking about getting a 12" sub but the problem is I dont want to just put it in a regular box. I go surfing a lot and always have my surfboards in my trunk(with the back seat folded down) and I wouldnt want to remove the box everytime I went to the beach. So I was wondering where a good place to put a sub would be?

I'm kind of thinking the spare tire spot but I'm not too sure if that would work out great. Anywhere that is out of the way and doesn't require too much work to make a fit is perfect.

you could always have me make you a custom box like i made for myself. fits inbetween the fenderwell and rear tail... just like the Kicker livin loud sub does. Cept its a slightly bigger box to accomodate the 12" sub w/ addequate airspace.

Ya that looks pretty good. I'm sure I could go somewhere and get a custom fit box for the spot right?

Are you happy with the 12" sub? Because I'm looking for a noticeable increase in bass but not an extreme amount if that makes sense haha

I have two 12" subs, i never got around to building the 2nd encloser for the pass side in the trunk. But, I like them, they hit hard when its needed, provide good bass and if i need to, i can outblast the ricer beside me with his crappy rap music... Funny to see the reaction of a guy having to listen to my Nine Inch Nails

The bigger the sub, the harder it can hit. 8" and 10" subs hit pretty decent, and they can also get higher frequency, 12" and 15" subs hit a bit harder, they get better bass response but they dont pickup as much high frequency. But when you think about it, your getting subs for low bass and not high frequency. As far as it being loud, it all depends on how much juice you are running to your sub, and how loud you turn the music up. If its an aftermaket radio, then most likely you have a seperate sub adjuster/control built in. That will let you lower or raise the dB level of the sub for its loudness too.

Now for the sub box, im pretty sure cartoys can make one for you, they do custom boxes, but they are very pricey.

You can also make one yourself, its not too hard. Just takes some paitence and time. All you gotta do is take some masking tape and completely tape the area you want to put the box in with about 2-3 layers of tape covering every inch that the box will go. Then take your fiberglass resin / hardener mixture and a brush, and put some down on the tape directly then take your fiberglass material that you already cut into squares and put them on the resin. Make sure its nice flat and saturated w/ the resin. I did 5 layers in the trunk which creates the backwall and floor/base of the enclosure. Now just take a piece of wood and cutout a mounting ring for your sub. Take some wooden dowles and glue them in place to hold the mounting ring in place where you want it. Then take a piece of cloth like fleece, cotton, or felt (i used felt) and tack it down aroudn the edges w/ a strong spray adhesive. Now start putting fiberglass resin on the cloth let it saturate. Make sure not to put any resin where the hole for the sub will be. I put a layer or two of fibgerglass material ontop of the cloth for a little bit more support. Once that was hardend i cut out the hole for the sub then poured some resin miscutre inside and moved the box aroudn so it would go into the cracks where the cloth met the fiberglass on the inside. The last thing to do is to goto radio shack, get a coupler plate. Cut a hole just the right size for it in the back of the sub and glue the plate and plop it in place. If you want you can add some fiberglass around the terminal plate to keep it in secure.

So you were actually running 2 12's but only one was in the box right? Did it rattle the trunk or anything, because I'm just looking for a nice bass that is noticeable but not too loud or shitty.

I ran boths subs, but I didnt really have trunk rattles, because I didnt really turn it up too loud. As far as bass goes, it was nice. With every system tho, no matter what size sub you have, you gotta tune it porperlly and have the cutoffs set for the speakers.
