Question about upgrading headlight wiring

Post by jT » Tue Jul 04, 2006 2:55 am

I am looking at doing the upgrade to my headlight wiring (I've seen some wire diagrams, read the article on Daniel Stern Lighting, and some posts about it) but still do not feel confident in modifying my factory wiring because I don't want to screw up. If you have done this, can you provide a well written how to step by step.

I'm sure it's really not too hard, but I don't want to end up with cut wires and no headlights.

Also, is there a way to connect the 12v to the fusebox or somewhere that I can get power from, without connecting it to the battery? I'd like it this way so that it appeared to be more factory-like and not have yet another wire connected to the battery (already have my audio amp, and once I add fog lights those will probably be on the battery also, unless they too can get power from somewhere else).

Are higher wattage bulbs safe to use in stock oem plastic headlights with this wiring upgrade?

Thanks.

and btw, yes I know there are wiring harness kits I can buy for $40-50, but would you want to pay that amount for such a "simple" thing?

ummmmm yeah, that's exactly why.

and i don't believe i mentioned anything about getting new lights, only asked would a higher wattage bulb be safe to use in plastic assembly. and i certainly didn't say anything about wanting projectors or any other kind of new headlight.

i guess you need to go read the article too about why to upgrade your wires too.

but thank you for your quick input on talk about brighter lights = blah blah why you want to blind people blah blah babble

A higher wattage bulb is eventually going to melt your headlight sockets. It happened to mine, took about a year or so for it to happen, but it did. I bought the 9007 high temp sockets that they sell at Advance and Auto zone (probably about $10) and just wired them in where the stock ones were. Ive had no problems since.

Theres places in the fuse box that you can get a 12v, I dunno about higher wattage bulbs working better, but you need a relay that cost about 7 bucks at advanced auto. If you want better light hid projectors is the way to go, and hak isnt the only solution like everyone thinks.

If you take time, you can make your own projectors like Hak. I eventualy plan on doing it... it just takes a little time and paitence.

i've seen a lot of people say that the light from projectors sucks

but thats besides the point

i've got an all stock neon and am not made of money like some people seem to be.. so i cant afford to use $300 for headlights, i wont even dish out $100 for diamond clear ones

this is a cheap way of getting some extra light

have you thought about upgrading your ground wiring (not to the lights, but the battery/starter/alt) and going with silverstars for extra light? I have never read the article you mentioned, but I assume you want better light output - that helped me :)
