door handles

Post by apk2k6 » Tue Jul 11, 2006 6:10 pm

I bought srt door handles to replace my stock black plastic handles and I just need to get them painted to match now.

I called about 5 places and the cheapest price I got was about $150-$160. The guy said he'd charge me $120 for labor and the rest for the cost of the paint (said it shouldnt be more than $40).

I thought this seemed kind of steep for just handles but I have no idea about pricing on this subject, and I know that you cant cheap out when it comes to the paint.

It would be cheaper to get them pre-painted from the dealer

I have a can of the PR4 flame red I need, and a can of primer as well. My dad tried to paint some other handles before and they came out with the orange peel texture.

So I'm thinking we should give it another shot and do it ourselves, but this time sand in between coats.

What grit sandpaper should be used and when should i sand (in between every coat or what?)

So sand the handle a little bit, primer. Coat of paint, wet sand, coat again, wetsand....etc

Then clear coat.

Is that correct?

Alright I got ya man, I'll give it a shot. I need to figure out a way to hold the actual handle up so I can spray under it....

you could have saved more money by just painting the handles on your car now. when i got new rear handles for my front doors, one of mine was those textured black ones. It came out smooth once it was painted

oh true ya I could have done that, but I also wanted the handle with no key hole on the front passenger side for a cleaner look so I just went with the srt handles. They were only about $20

Well I primered, wet sanded, few coats of paint, wet sanded, then a few coats of clear. And after every coat dries, the handle seems to be a real dull color, even after the clear coats, and its kind of peeling a little.

Another place said $120 cash for labor, materials, and everything. I'm thinking about doin that even though thats pretty expensive. Then I'll know that it's done right.

I remember the price, I think they were close to $60 each or something like that for pre-painted.

So what do you think, should I just drop them off for a day and pay $120 to get them painted professionally?

I'm not an expert painter by any means and very picky about detail things like this so I don't want to mess it up.

You may have answered your own question. I am in the same boat as you with that kind of stuff. It is a little expensive, but at least you know it will be done right.

Because all of the body shops I called said they couldn't paint the textured plastic handles. Which I now know isn't true since Crucial said he painted his plastic handles.

But anyways I like the clean look of the no key hole on the passenger side.

edit: By the way im dropping them off tomorrow and picking them up saturday morning so I'll post pics when they're installed.

The only to get the handles repainted cheaper is if you go in with a bigger item like a body kit or something a places said they would do the handles for like 40 bucks.

Not that that will work for you. I'd either get them thru BRR or keep hitting the junk yards.

oh and BRR is that per handle or a set?
