My Eye!!! My Eye!!!

Post by kc2005ptgt » Fri Jul 14, 2006 6:12 pm

Alright, so some of you have already heard a little bit here and there, but since I am bored, and have nothing else to do, I will tell you all a little story, and afterwards you will all be the wiser.

I got my spoiler in the mail on wednesday, so after work I went over to my parents house to do the install (they have a garage) and was getting everything ready for drilling, etc and had to make a few messurements. I have one of those flimsy rules made of all metal, and it is about 18" long, so it bends and twists, and what not... so, to make a long story short:

I was bent over marking on a piece of paper and sweating bullets. There are flies all over because I stink from work and am sweating in the 100 degree heat when one of them buzzes my face. Out of instinct I swipe at it, but with the ruler and not my hand. Well, the end all result was a quick swipe to the eye with the corner of the ruler!

At first all I did was cuss and stomp around holding my eye trying to stop it from tearing up so much. At first I couldn't open it, and so I went upstairs to the bathroom and looked at it, but couldn't see anything. So, the pain subsides a bit, and I continue working on the spoiler. With one eye.

I got the spoiler on, mowed my parents grass, drove to the car wash, washed my car, drove around town running up my milage (to 50k!!) and took some pictures. This all happened between 3pm and 6:30pm. I hit my eye at 2:45pm. I got home, waited for my wife to get home, and when she walked in (already knowing what happened) took one look and exclaimed, "Oh my gosh!! You eye is worse than I thought!" Apparently it was all puffed up and red.

After about 2 hours of moaning and complaining about my eye, debating about whether or not to go to the ER, or wait till tomorrow to go to the doctor, I decided at 9:30pm to hit the ER at the hospital up the street. I was only there for 1 1/2 hours, but man!! What a place.

The doctor told me several things, one of which cracked me up and that was, He had never seen a cut on the eye like this before. It was V shaped and just above my pupil, missing my iris by about 1mm. He also said that if it had been a little lower, I would have severed the little "muscles" that control the pupil size, and probably lost sight, and quite possibly permanantly. I was astonished! He also said I did not pucture the cornea, which is good because it could have required surgery. The scratch is now healed, almost completely and the pain is subsided for now.

Moral of the story - do not use metal near your eyes to swat flies.

By the way, I am all doped up on Vicodin right now, and for the rest of the weekend, so anything I say I can not be held responsible for. And yes, this stuff is strong. Not as strong as morphine, but none the less!

Man, and I thought it was bad when I left a pair of scissors on top of my ladder at work, and scratched my cornea. (Scissors were closed).

damn man you got lucky. when i was like 5 years old i got hit directly in the eye with a small rock. not pebble, but small rock. probably bout same size as my eye at the time. completely destroyed my muscles that open and close the pupil. one pupil stays smal llike normal while the fucked up one remains pretty big becasue it cannot close. you dont notice it unless you try to compare pupils so thats good. but yeh i can barley see out of my bad eye, but with both open i see perfect. my eye doctor doesnt understand how i see so well. he is like you see like you got better than 20/20 when you use both eyes even though you can barely even see out of one. they didnt have a way to fix it at the time, but now that technology has advanced they can do some kind of lazer surgery to fix it. iunno if id do it though because i see fine and it doesnt really bother me. oh well thoguh what do you do right?

My pupils are weird too, but not because I got hit with anything, they're just naturally weird. I can see really really really well at night, like when the lights go off I can see almost perfectly right away, but I'm really sensitive to light. Went to the eye doctor and he was testing my pupils and how they dialate. Well something about when it's dark they stay open abnormally large, but when it's light, they don't shrink like they should. He was so excited about it he wanted me to come in for more tests, but my eyes are so sensitive I never went back in. Besides...I like being able to see in the dark.

I took a steel-roll pin to the pupil that shot out of a bench-vice while a guy was using a grinder to cut it. Not only was it sharp, it was red hot.
I can see. Miracles happen daily. Vicoden is good...nuff said.
