SX 2 Steering wheel wobble

Post by venneron » Sat Jul 15, 2006 12:27 am

I have a 2004 SX 2. The steering has a wobble, new from the factory. The dealer balanced the wheels, then changed the wheels, and rebalanced.
All of this changed at what speed the wobble would appear, and how severe it was. But it always there.
Now, barely noticable, but still there.
Does anyone else have this problem??

^^^
regular neons dont use them....
It sounds to me that the tires are shot, if a car sits in one spot for to long the tires will acutally get damaged. The car you bought, how long was it sitting at the dealership?
We just sold a car a few weeks ago that was not moved in 6 months and all 4 tires had to be replaced because of sitting there they went bad, belts shifted and what not...

what year is it, and how many miles are on the tires? How fast do you have to go before you notice the wobble? My wifes car needs new tires, but they do not get a steering wobble until about 75mph, so it isn't a huge deal. Did you get an alignment too? Did you get your suspension checked out? You could have some problems with bushings or control arms, or something else not related to the wheels/tires. My car needs all new front bushings, but IU heard most are a bear to replace, so I am going to wait a while. :(

steering wobble

Post by venneron » Sat Jul 15, 2006 3:25 pm

The car is a 2004
The car and tires were new. New wheels with tires wre tried.
The best balancing leave s a slight wooble at 40km/h.
I've never had a vehicle do that after a good balance.
The dealer just gave up. But there must be something wrong somewhere???????

some tire shops have an alignment machine and will check alignment for free - do that.

some tire shops also will check your suspension for free - do that.

Those are my answers for you.

My boyfriend's sister's car is also having a steering wheel problem. She was in a front end collision a while back, but im not sure how bad the accident was. She told me her hood was crumpled, but shes not a car girl really, so she didnt give me details other than that.

She said the steering wheel feels 'off'. That it shakes when shes going slow in a parking lot, like the rotors are warped. They went to change the rotors yesterday, and they are fine. The car is an 04 w/ 26,000 miles.

I have yet to drive it and see for myself what kind of 'wobbling' it has. Anyone have any ideas?

She said she knows for a fact that her tires were replaced after the accident. Do you think it could be part of her suspension that is still slightly off??

Neons are also HIGHY sensitve to wheel balance. 99% of all wheel balancing is done to the 1/4 oz. To really get rid of any wobble, neons like balancing to the 1/8 oz. But good luck finding a shop with a machine to do that.

Best I can tell you is that if everything else is new and good, then youre going to have to learn to live with it.

Most tire machines have a round out. It rounds it to the nearest 1/4 ounce. You can turn it off and it shows the actually weight needed. If you goto a place that has someone that knows what they are doing they will do it for you.

If you take it to someone that has a good wheel balancer AND knows what there doing they can tell if the rim is bent/tire is shot/ out of balance etc..
The good tire balancers also have a road force tool that measures roadforce applied to the wheel/tire...
I balanced my wheels at Wal-Mart and then took one off the car and re-balanced it at work with our tire machine and the wal-mart machines were off...

I have this same problem. I was set on the fact that it was a warped rotor. The fact that it could be tires/rims freaks me out... that's even more expensive. lol.

Could a car sitting for a long time cause a wobble? I thought all that did was degrade the tires to the point that they become weak and unsafe.

Well, my guess would be, if the tires were sitting for a long time, they become deflated, weak, one happens to go flat, then the weight that is normally resting on the tire/tires is now resting on the rim, which could very well cause bending and warping.

Just a shot at it :)

If a car sits without moving for a long time, you can get flat spots in the tire and as BRR said before,

I was just at a wal-mart last week for my oil change. I get called back and asked where I had it done last. Told them where I had it done. Then they said they couldn't get the oild cap off so they had to decline service. I said I could get the oild cap off but asked if they where talking about the pan plug. The lady said she didn't know so we went out to the tech and she asked and he said the oil cap for the oil fill on top the engine. I said dude just turn it hard. He did and it came off and problem was solved.

sorry for highjacking.

I'd take it to NTB and have them look it over. Always been happy with service and price from them.
