Question about oil pressure gauge

Post by daaboots » Sun Jul 16, 2006 8:21 pm

I'm thinking about buying an oil pressure gauge and I have a couple questions.

What is the typical oil pressure for a 2.0 non mag? Will a 0-100 psi work?

Has anybody ever had problems with a mechanical oil pressure gauge?

Roughly...

Cold Idle: 50 psi
Cold 3000 RPM: 80 psi
Warm idle: 25 psi
Warm 3000 rpm: 50 psi

Yes a 100psi gauge will work

For a mechanical gauge, people have done it and it's best to hook it up outside the passenger compartment since you don't want to risk having a leak or maybe being in an accident then having the line rupture to have hot oil squirting on anyone inside if the engine is still running. Just a safety factor to keep it outside the car, like mounted on the cowl.

thanks. I plan on mounting it on my dash, but hot oil doesn't sound very fun. not too sure what I'm going to do now. The autometer digital one is very expensive... too much for me.

anybody ever had problems with the mechanical???

If you get a mechanical one, just be careful where you route the nylon tubing. I had one in my Daytona for years and it was fine. It was right next to a heating vent and the heat from the winter time didn't even affect the tubing at all. Personally, within the next 6 months, I'll be installing an oil pressure gauge in my Neon as well. I'm putting it in the SRT boost gauge cup.

Again, just be very careful routing the tubing and you should be all set having it installed inside the car. When you're pulling the tube through the firewall, pull SLOWLY so you don't kink it. If you kink the tubing, it will more than likely leak because it creates a weak spot.

Yeah it's right above the bedplate that can just barely be seen as you lay on the ground and look on the back of the block. It has a electrical connector thats green.

Here's a pic of where the oil sender is. It's the big can on the left. This set-up retains the stock idiot light, and an electric oil pressure gauge. The small sender on the right is the coolant temp sensor.

I would recomend electrical over mechanical if your a newbie(no offense)
Autometer offers a 2 1/16 inch in there:
cobalt/c2/nexus/chrome/z-series/sort-comp/phantom/ultralite line up...
Those are the only 2 1/16 inch electrical gauge that reads 0-100psi...

Ok. So it looks like electric is the way to go. I was looking around and found this:

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetai ... toview=sku

Then I found this on MP. Scroll almost to the bottom.
http://www.modernperformance.com/all/mo ... uges.shtml

I dont get it. I can get an electric Mopar for $70 or an electric "regular lookin" Autometer for $200???? I thought the Mopar gauges were made by Autometer anyway? Any explanation??

I have the "M" Mopar oil pressure and coolant temp gauges from MP, on a MP pillar pod. If you buy the Autometer blue light bulb "condoms", the color comes close to the OE dash lights. FYI, that was a 42K mile $400 junkyard Magnum oil filter mod, lol.

Also remember the fullsweep is also more acurate than the other, thats another reason why its so expensive...more readings between digits Vs the non full sweep......
Full sweep - 0/2/4/6/8/10/etc/etcpsi increments
Non full sweep - 0/12.5/25/37.5/50/62.5/75/87.5/100psi increments

My gauge came in :D I have the sending unit all installed. I went with the T setup so i could still connect the stock sensor. What a pain it was installing that!

Here's a pic mounted to the dash. Note my new wood panel interior trim - lol j/k

Quesstion: I have 3 wires to connect, not including the two for the light bulb. They are labled "G", "S", and "I". I firgue G is ground, but what is "S" and "I"????
